Robbie Robertson wrote "Up On Cripple Creek" released as a single in November 1969, reaching #25 on the Billboard Hot 100, The Band's biggest hit record. Drummer Levon Helm sings lead on this rousing country-classic slice of Americana (despite the fact that the members of The Band hail from Canada). They got their start as Bob Dylan's back-up band after he shocked the Folk Music establishment at 1967's Newport Folk Festival when he showed up with an electric guitar and The Band. A few weeks ago, Dylan's Stratocaster from Newport sold at auction for over $1,000,000, the highest price ever paid for a single guitar.

"Cripple Creek" was a staple of Band concerts throughout the group's career. The first live version is from their "Before The Flood" tour when they reunited with Dylan in 1974. The final selection is from The Band's "farewell" concert, The Last Waltz which took place at Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976 and was filmed for a 1978 motion picture. The event included an actual Thanksgiving dinner for the 5000 invited attendees, with ballroom dancing and guests artists ranging from fellow Canadians Neil Young, Ronnie Hawkins and Joni Mitchell to Van Morrison, New Orlean's Bobby Charles & Dr. John, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, Neil Diamond and an extended set with Bob Dylan.

This week there was a thread on FR about a new release of Beatle Demos, Out-takes and alternate versions. I didn't participate in that thread because the majority of posters seem to think that alternative Beatle stuff must be crap. I must now say that at the age of nine I saw them debut on The Ed Sullivan Show and Beatlemania crept into my childhood and robbed me of it. From that Sunday night in February 1964 forward, I gave up my ambition to be an astronaut or a cowboy when I grew up. I wanted to be a Beatle! So, I know I've got a soft-spot for the greatest R'N'R band ever, but that's my lot in life and my collection of rarities leans heavily upon the fab four. Even their crap is better than most band's heavy lifting imho. Here's one of the most beautiful ballads ever composed:
