Officer shoots and kills attacking pit bull

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego police detective shot and killed a pit bull Wednesday in Mount Hope after the canine bit him and an FBI agent.

The officers were doing a probation compliance check at a home on 40th Street near F Street about 9 a.m. when the dog got loose, San Diego police Lt. Eric Hays said.

A woman at the home had put the animal and another dog into a room, Hays said.

When she went to move the animals to another location the pit bull ran outside and charged the officers who were standing in a side yard.

The dog bit the detective on the left leg and when he tried to push it away it bit him on the right hand, Hays said.

The FBI agent then hit the dog with a baton and it also bit him on the hand.

At that point the detective drew his gun and shot the animal three times, Hays said.

The dog, a 13-month-old male, died at the scene with the FBI agent’s glove still in its mouth, the lieutenant said.

The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment of their wounds.

I’m used to feeling angry when I read these “Cops shoot dog” stories.... but in this case, I side for the cops.

The officers were doing a probation compliance check

They are using detectives and FBI agents for simple probation checks?

A lot depends on what one is on probation for, I guess.

Anyway, good shoot on this one.

FBI, ATF and officers from all departments can and do conduct probation compliance checks. It’s not unusual.

But it was always the sweetest dog, great with kids.

Well, I was under the impression probation compliance checks were done by probation officers, not detectives and FBI agent. Seems a bit odd...There is likely more to this story than what is printed here.

Yeah, and so was Darnell. He and the dog just didn’t like cops.

Perfectly justifiable presuming the officers were in a location where they had the legal right to be.

If the dog is going to be that violent, it is better that it was put down because if it would attack grown policemen, it would someday be attacking some passing child on a bike or a neighbor’s dog.

Sorry lady. Should have kept a dog you could control.

And was just turning it's life around, and was starting a promising career in nip-hop...

Sounds pretty fair.
The owners were trying to be compliant but hey, **** happens.

Never really thought about it, The few times they’ve checked on my roommates it’s just been the local PD.

That story is in regards to a big task force, not a simple probation compliance check.

Your link was in regards to this, not a simple probation compliance check.

__________________________________________________________

It was a massive show of law enforcement. The FBI tells me this was a joint, multi-agency operation carried out by Oakland police, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service, the CHP, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, and more.

Could be the officers involved knew the suspect. Did you notice that in the story at the link I gave you it said the Secret Service participated also? Now I think that’s odd. FBI, not so much so.

I suppose it is dependent on the terms of your probation.

Big jerks get special attention.
But is does sound as if they were trying to be compliant.

**** happens.
When I get attacked I attack back.
