AMITYVILLE, New York (WABC) -- Law enforcement sources tell Eyewitness News, a 20-year-old Long Island man is under arrest and is expect to be charged with up to 7 counts of 'knockout' assaults that date back to April of 2013.
Darryl Mitchell of Amityville is expected to be charged in the assaults of residents, at least two of them elderly in the Babylon to Amityville area.
Darryl Jones says it came out of nowhere. A single, roundhouse punch to the face that left him stunned. And a gash above his eye that took seven stitches to close.
"It I wasn't strong enough, I probably would've passed out," Jones said.
He told Eyewitness News he was walking home from the grocery store at three in the afternoon when a young man came walking toward him.
"He was walking on the sidewalk and I moved out of the way just to step into the street and he stood in front of me holding up his hands and hit me in the face," adds Jones.
Eyewitness News has learned exclusively tonight that Darryl Mitchell will be charged with half a dozen assaults that go back as far as April.
One of them, on the Long Island Rail Road platform in Amityville. Several others in Babylon and in his own neighborhood, in North Amityville.
Sources say the victims were as young as 17 and as old as 69.
One victim told police, "He just started to punch me in the face multiple times for no reason. And then the black male started to kick me in my body and head. I blacked out a little and all I heard him saying was get off my block."

Another Amityville horror ....
I’m against overcharging, but in this case I think the charge should be attempted murder.
When they get tired of this game the next “level” will be to walk up and shoot someone in the gut from contact range.
They won’t stop until a bunch of them get shot!
20 years old. Guess the angst in the news department was overwhelming as to how to describe the scumbag. Could not call him the usual “teen” or “youth” so run the article for a few paragraphs, hopefully no one will read much further, as it finally describes this POS as a “black male.”
Attempted murder is not overcharging. People have died from these attacks.
I would hope that those guys in prison would look at this coward and beat his ass daily.
Probably won’t though.
He did it for Tra’Von!
And, yet again, more evidence that it is common sense, not racism, to treat young black men as a potential threat and give them a wide berth.
Lived down the road from amityville 30 + years ago. It was no walk in the park then. It is worse now.
The creation of monsters is a result of the planned deconstruction of our civil society. The proposed solution is totalitarianism. Cloward and Piven at work: the Community Organizer in Chief is pleased.
Well for a slight charge jj and rev al will get a mob togeather to defend this worthless POS who is being charged because of his race.
This will happen as soon as the money is deposited in their accounts.
“They wont stop until a bunch of them get shot!”
That won’t happen in New York. Now in Texas...
It is time to initiate caning. Try something like this in Singapore and the punishment HURTS. Here he will get free cable TV and great food for a couple if years before he is rehabilitated and freed. No wonder the country is going down the drain.
“Attempted murder is not overcharging. People have died from these attacks.”
I’m not 100% sure about attempted murder as the charge, but the charge MUST include the premeditated aspect of the assaults.
As long as they [the victims] put up with it it will continue to worsen.
When they catch these bastards, they should be hit in the head again and again - as many times as they have done this to other people and it should be put on You-tube as “Knock-Out Payback to discourage other young punks.
This will not stop untill creeps like Darryl Mitchell of Amityville’ home address and photograph are widely circulated.
