Misleading headline. Why not say “accident at firefighting school injures two” until the real cause can be determined? Because that doesn’t make “good” news.
Airplane. Fire. Jet fuel mistaken for water. I’m guessing the infamous pilot “Sum Ting Wong” was in the area again.
Except he did it on purpose.

They didn’t ‘mistakenly’ pump jet fuel onto a fire.
That makes it sound as if they just hooked a hose up to a tank of jet fuel and started spraying.
They were using recycled water just like they were supposed to.
BUT they recycled water still had jet fuel in it from previous exercises.
It was obviously a mechanical failure in the recovery system somewhere, probably a busted separator.
The reporters even say so in the segment.
But what do they name the story?

The Firefighter’s name was David Bowie.
It certainly made me click the story on. I couldn’t help myself. People have been fed a regular diet of Bleeps and Bloopers for years, so I admit, I was ready for a good laugh.

On a real aircraft fire (as opposed to a training exercise) people are less worried about recycling the water used and more worried about extinguishing the fire. Under those circumstances, this would not have happened because there would have been no separator to fail.

Why should these TRAINEES, meaning those in training by definition, never get near a fire again? Who put or allowed jet fuel in the lines? Do you even care?

This was a training exercise. During those you start fires as well as put them out.
I agree with you, but clearly something went wrong here. The addition of jet fuel was not part of the intended training, or it wouldn’t have ended up in the news.
Same nozzle design?
Training exercises are where you go to accomplish your finest screw-ups.
This way you reduce the chances of a ‘cluster’ attacking your performance in a real emergency.
I hope they will all be able to use this invaluable knowledge to save life in the future.
