The Houston school district board has given preliminary approval to a new policy that would prohibit offensive or culturally insensitive mascots.
The new policy calls on schools to show respect and cultural sensitivity in nicknames and mascots. The use of any race or ethnic group will be prohibited, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Is this the dept that will be deciding what is and isn’t “offensive”?
Looks like goodbye to my mascot, the Lamar Redskin!
++++++++++++
Yep that was one of the four mentioned in an article I read.
These names all came about to preserve Indian history. As usual, the Indians are enveloped in their ignorance....and greed.
The sad part is that Indians are now offensive.
Well, the University of California at Santa Cruz Banana Slugs offend me! Have you ever seen a banana slug? They are as big as a banana and disgusting.
Does the Houston school district have any such mascots? Or is this symbolic?
Best I could find:
Barbara Jordan HS Jaguars
Jefferson Davis HS Panthers
Cesar Chavez HS Lobos
Sharpstown HS Apollos
Sterling HS Raiders
Lee HS Generals
Austin HS Mighty Mustangs
OK, I clicked the link....”Warrior” is not the name of an ethnic group. Anyone can be a warrior. Hubert Humphrey was the Happy Warrior (also Al Smith as I recall).
Oooh...there they go. They could put up a pic of HHH and then their mascot could be a camel with a broken back.
And they sided with the English...with the words...(imow) "no one can beat the King". Surprise, surprise.
As my Seneca lady friend said...they don't want to work...they drink and do drugs... and they are not disciplined by their parents. Any of the good ones go to Canada.
But not for nothing, my respect for the steel walkers remains in tact.
The article mentions four schools that maybe impacted. Click the article link.
“Let’s go both teams”
(Clap, clap, clap clap clap)
I find the Houston school board offensive. Very offensive.
Mexican Cowboys
Maynard Dixon didn't speak PC in 1909...
It was just the students trying to be their anti-establishment selves. When the university first opened the student body was asked to vote on name for the mascot, and they chose banana slugs. Those little beasts are found in the woods around Santa Cruz, and UC Santa Cruz is known as the “party school” in the (otherwise demanding) University of California network. But mostly they chose it because everybody who hears it says “Ewwwwww”. I’ve been known to scream when I encountered one on a trail — more than once.
“The Braves” ?? Go figure
Strake Jesuit (private) College Prep Crusaders! I noticed that after 9/11 they changed the name of their quarterly from “Crusader Chronicle” to “Chronicle”.
