It was a catchy political pitch and a chance to calm nerves about his dramatic and complicated plan to bring historic change to Americas health insurance system.
"If you like your health care plan, you can keep it," President Barack Obama said -- many times -- of his landmark new law.
But the promise was impossible to keep.
So this fall, as cancellation letters were going out to approximately 4 million Americans, the public realized Obamas breezy assurances were wrong.

Just mentioned it on the Five, so funny.
“But the promise was impossible to keep.”
Impossible, politifact? Impossible? Can you stop your biased sugar coating for 5 seconds?
Right up there with:
The check is in the mail and I promise to pull out.
The rank and file liberals are prefectly willing to be lied to by other liberals, however. Lying is just standard behavior to them. I’ve heard them say “All politicians lie, what’s the big deal?”. The only thing they really care about is putting socialists in power.
Yikes. But accurate!
On the last episode of the TV show “The Walking Dead” the bad guys with a tank and lots of firepower are across from the men, women and children. One of the bad guys shuts down the “negotiations” by saying:
“What you have, is what we want. Period.”
I wonder if a closet conservative writer got that sentence in there. It was like putting Obama’s words through a truth machine.
Of course, the promise was never meant to be kept. But still, for Politifact, this is rather extraordinary.
Didn’t you all get the memo? One of the plan’s architects said that you can absolutely keep your doctor and your insurance, but you’ll have to pay a lot more for the privilege. That’s what Mr. Obama MEANT. You can’t take him at his word, you gotta get the REAL meaning from his minions.
Sorry, I missed that memo. But I’m sure Minister of Truth Carney will straighten us all out soon.
Sounds like a campaign slogan. For either Obama or Mitch McConnell, sad to say.
well, that would make obama LIAR OF THE YEAR
But Creepy Mister Emanuelle, Obama said PERIOD. In other words, whatever you say he meant to follow the statement with could not have been what he meant, because PERIOD means that’s all, there ain’t no modifiers.
I’ve always loved that top graphic. Not so much what was said, because that’s what they do, but it’s funny to me.
Indeed. The very reason for my post.
The other 9 top lies rounding out the top 10 are also Obama’s and they all begin with “I was unaware of.....” fill in the blank.
