General Motors (GM) tapped products chief Mary Barra to become the auto maker's first female CEO, taking the keys from current chief Dan Akerson who will step down ahead of schedule in January.
The promotion of Barra instantly makes her the most powerful woman in Detroit and one of the most influential in corporate America.
The move comes just hours after the Treasury Department exited its ownership of GM following the auto bailouts of 2008 and 2009.

Dear Mary: We were glad to lose 10.5 billion dollars knowing that you would be at the helm soon....like real soon.
Please feel free to tap us anytime. America is always looking for a sucker bet.
signed....BO
Appointed by the Union stockholder board members?
If putting an Affirmative Action Hire in charge is good for America, it’s good for General Motors.
No, wait, I think I got that wrong....
In my opinion Ms. Barra has paid enough dues at the company, that we should take her leadership seriously.
Welcome. The government is now out of the auto industry.
Buy American.
Another GM lifer who did nothing to stop the bleeding. At least like Carla Fiornia when she ran HP into the ground, GM will get fawning press coverage.
I still don’t buy Chrysler because of the first Lee Iacocca bail out.
Now they are on the frequent filer program. I only know one way to signal my disapproval of the corrupt unions, the inane management, and the government bailout.
Well I agree with you on not supporting the government bailout.
That is over, as of this morning.
This is a new day. Whether you support Ms. Barra or not (I do so far) she’s not doing the government’s bidding.
If you count sales, the CEO should be Chinese!
Her undergrad is in electrical engineering, not business, a very good sign.
From TFA:
“Barra, who previously ran GM’s HR department, began her career with company as a General Motors co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.”
A CEO who used to run the HR department.... riiiight.
If you’ve worked in corporate America, you’ve had run-ins with the HR department and the women who run them. If she’s anything like all the women I’ve run into who ran HR departments, GM’s fate is now sealed.
Hey, at least on the bright side, the price of the GM common is high enough to make some money on the short side when it goes down.
It ordinarily would be... if she’d done any engineering at GM.
As for EE’s who are worthless: Mike Bloomberg is a EE. If Mike Bloomberg were on fire, I couldn’t be troubled to piddle on him.
HR was only her latest assignment, and probably an important addition to her background.
She’s a factory rat sort of. I like her so far.
Wish her well. Being in a elevated and high level position is hard for anyone. Everybody wants your seat and will do anything to get it. It will be tough for her from the Left, because she’s married, to a man. That won’t set well with them. Lefties prefer women of power to be single lesbians. They find women who are married to men, and especially if they have children, to be third class citizens not worthy of any recognition
Good Luck, Mary.
Well, the true test is what she does with the hourly worker comp packages.
GM, thanks to Bush and Obama, was prevented from being given the harsh choice they needed to kick the union down a flight of stairs.
Ford bought out lots of over-comp’ed employees 10 years ago. GM has failed to restructure their employment costs. Unless and until that happens, GM is going to be in trouble again... soon.
There are two storied being floated around in the media about the 10 billion dollars we Americans lost or gained due to the GM bailout. Her first test for me will be which story she embraces.
“If youve worked in corporate America, youve had run-ins with the HR department and the women who run them. If shes anything like all the women Ive run into who ran HR departments...”
Said “women” are the definition of the term c***.
However, you have to admit Bloomie is much better at business than politics.
Chrysler got no money from the Feds.
