Former President Jimmy Carter told NBC News on Monday that he places Nelson Mandela alongside Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa as exemplars of inspiration and moral virtue in world history.
In an interview with Brian Williams from Johannesburg, the 39th president said that Mandela belongs among figures to be looked upon with a great deal of admiration.
They weathered very difficult times, they came through with flying colors, they inspired other people, Carter said. I think that Nelson would go down in history as one of the leading people of the century.

Mandela was offered release many times during his incarceration if he renounced terrorist acts.

Maybe we could have the Chinese make another monument to him on the Mall in Washington—we could put it next to the one they built for Sir Winston Churchill. Not!
I would put Mandela alongside Franco and Pinochet. Some good, some bad, in each case it could have been a lot worse.
But I have to wonder what Mandela would have been like if the Soviet Union had not collapsed before he took power. And if all foreign capital had divested, leaving the Mandela unconcerned about the attitudes of other countries.
It strikes me as a very reasonable thing to think that Ronald Reagan may have been the best thing that ever happened to South Africa...
