Spent some time with the French Marines a little southwest of Kamina (Shaba Province) in the late 80s.
Even got to jump out of one of their C-160s.
Interesting times to say the least.

Hagel is just the go-along toady in this. The action is directly in concordance with Samantha Power's Responsibility to Protect.
As Monica Crowley writes, her doctrine states that the U.S. has a moral responsibility to intervene anywhere there is a slaughter or the potential of slaughter (whether our strategic interests are involved or not). Just What Does Samantha Power Believe

I used to read Soldier of Fortune back in the early 80's. It seemed that every other issue was about how awesome the French Foreign Legion was, or about the Battle of Ia Drang.
Thankfully, I learned to form my opinions about the French and the Vietnamese using other sources as well.
In any case, whenever I see someone extolling the FFL over other equally-adept branches of the French military (the Marines, for example) I just have to laugh.

I hope they are going to pay for the taxi service - we have a deficit to deal with.

The Frogs have a serious interest in keeping central and northern Africa stable. Immigrants/wetbacks swimming the Med. are a huge problem for them. They recently stopped the Krap in Mali in fairly short order and I fully expect them to stay engaged in the north half of Africa. Every time there is a flair-up in North Africa they get a whole new crop of excapees.

"Oh I see...Were getting our military involved to pass out cup cakes and invitations to Madellas funeral extravaganza."
No, we're supplying military airlift capability to other countries troops so that they can quell the possible escalation of a civil war into a genocide. If you want to talk about what's proposed, I'm fine with that. If you want to make flippant remarks like the one above, it does nothing to further your argument and is truly not even worth responding to. We'll have to agree to disagree, but please, disagree based on logical arguments.

Well, it’s fashionable to slam the French due to their collapse in 1940, but that was more due to incompetent leadership and planning than any cowardice on the part of individual soldiers. Seems it’s a commonly repeated thing to see French troops fighting bravely but in a hopeless situation thanks to their government and generals.
I guess you have to look at 20th- and 21st-century French military history through the lens of World War I and the incredible slaughter the French endured fighting on their own soil for four years. The best of an entire generation were wiped out in the trenches.

I never bought one but I used to read SOF in the news/magazine store when I was a kid.
I miss the smell of those places.

If you want to complain about something, it should be that these Euroweenies spend all of their money on socialistic cradle to grave programs and one of the reasons is because they enjoy our free military support. The French owned much of North Africa including this territory at one time so I can see how they have a very close relationship here. However, we need to start sending them a bill or they need to cut down on the social programs so they can have a proper military like they used to when they owned this part of the world. It appears that the French dropped their opposition to the Iran nuke deal in exchange for U.S. help in Africa. For the French, it was an easy way to get something for nothing. Note how surprised we were that France opposed the Iran deal. Well here's the reason. They set up a roadblock to get bought off.
