PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) - An Upstate sheriff said in a Facebook post on Friday that he would not lower his flag for Nelson Mandela, even after an executive order from the president.
Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said in the post that he refused to lower the flag to half-staff after the death of the former South African president, who died on Thursday. Clark continued to say in the Facebook post that it should be lowered at the United States embassy in South Africa.
Clark said in the post, "Nelson Mandela did great things for his country and was a brave man but he was not an AMERICAN!!!"
This comes after President Obama's executive order to have all American flags lowered in remembrance of Mandela.
Clark did say in the post that the department's flag would be at half-staff on Friday for an officer who died in the Lowlands, and it would also be lowered on Saturday for Pearl Harbor Day.
Here is the sheriff's full post:
I usually don't post political items, but today is different. I received this notification today, "As a mark of respect for the memory of Nelson Mandela, the President orders that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset, December 9, 2013"
Nelson Mandela did great things for his country and was a brave man but he was not an AMERICAN!!! The flag should be lowered at our Embassy in S. Africa, but not here. Our flag is at half staff today for a Deputy in the low country who died going to help his fellow Deputy. He deserves the honor. I have ordered that the flag here at my office back up after tomorrow's mourning of Pearl Harbor Day!

Good
Good for him.
Share that with all the deniers.
He should be getting his audit notice soon.
Bless him.....Stand strong, Sheriff!
Damn I’m proud to be a South Carolinian
I wish My Sheriff had the guts to do that here in NC.
A foreign born communist is not worthy of an American half-mast flag. That being said we shouldn’t lower the flag for Mandela either.
Good —
And after his audit, he´ll get a few visits from the Secret Service, the F.B.I, and he´ll find himself in a tangle with the news media.
An elected sheriff doesn’t take orders from the president. Good for him. Some of us need to be reminded that the president isn’t our boss. He;s not a king.
I agree totally.
Flying the flag at half staff should be reserved for the loss of great Americans; statesmen and heroes.
Perhaps the flag could be flown at half staff for a foreign national that has done great service for the United States or was a great leader of an important ally. (Winston Churchill who was half American for example)
Good for him.
Standing. Ovation.
Obama can only require US Flags at Federal Offices and properties be flown at half staff,(States, Counties, and Cities are free to do as they please). In Mandella’s case the US Flag at half staff is unwarranted and undeserved. But consider the source.
Won’t say where it is, but saw a flag the past few days that is always lowered with Dear Leader orders it, except this time...
