Beware an unchecked president (in LA Times!)
Los Angeles Times ^ | DEc 8, 2013 | Jacob S. Hacker and Oona A. Hathaway

Subtitle: The solution to a dysfunctional Congress is not for Obama to govern the country all by himself.

In the face of congressional gridlock, President Obama has started taking more and more matters into his own hands. In recent months, he has announced new gun control measures, put in place limited immigration reform and made fixes to the Affordable Care Act — all without Congress. Many liberals who once worried about presidential overreach have applauded his robust use of presidential power.

Yet the president's increasing unilateralism shouldn't be cause for celebration. Bypassing Congress means bypassing democratic checks. It also means giving up on government's ability to effectively address serious long-term challenges. The solution to a dysfunctional Congress isn't an unchecked executive; it's a Congress that actually works.

Article starts out well, but then it recommends ending filibusters on everything -- which of course would further reduce to eliminate the power of Congress and the minority party.

I would really like to see a nice solid Republican majority in Congress and courageous Republican president who would give the Dems a dose of their own medicine. And this is not impossible, if Republicans would get their act together...

It is unlikely that this article would have been published in the LA Times had it not been for Jonathan Turley’s testimony in the House a few days ago.

I wonder, if it were say Dec 20xx and President Palin were doing the same kinds of things, how many of these fair and even minded honorable legislators would still be applauding? {ha!}

Wow, is it a sign of the end times? I actually agree with something in the LA Times... Though I have to say I am hoping for a complete Republican takeover of Congress in the mid-terms. That way working together maybe the House and Senate can hold obama in check long enough for a Republican win in '16, while there's still some semblance of America left...

There is a misconception that a legislature that is gridlocked in not working.

Yes it is. This is how it is supposed to work when one side is trying to drag us over the cliff.
Hopefully the president would be able to stop the suicidal factions and help get us to safe ground. Unfortunately this president is helping the wrong side.

But, yes, this is the way it is supposed to work. Our hope now is that the Supreme court can somehow assist the beleaguered house. If not I believe the house can still hold them all off while the public takes control of the situation.

Why the “In LA Times!” as if that fact was meaningful. It’s an EDITORIAL, an opinion piece. It could appear anywhere, in any liberal rag.

Excellent point! It drives my crazy when someone says that a Congress is being "productive" when it is churning out lots of new laws.

A Congress doing that is more probably being reckless and intrusive. As you noted, gridlock is usually a good thing.

An even bigger problem is the lack of an opposition party. Instead, we have a go-along-to-get-along we-wanna-be-Dem-lite party.

Very true. During the government shutdown I heard way too many people complaining about "how dare the House do that!" etc. etc. When I had the time and opportunity, I corrected them by reminding them that actually, that is the House's job and that it was an example of checks and balances in action. Sadly most still seemed miffed that the House would dare oppose the won...

Weird that they called it a republic in the article. Are we being punk’d by somebody here?

It’s an editorial! Every paper posts editorial opinions that contrast with the prevalent editorial position of the paper. There’s nothing unique or remarkable here.

If your question was addressed to me, you, Technical Editor, are not the only person on this site with a media background, if that is indeed what it makes reference to.

LA Times and other liberal papers almost never publish even editorial that go against their communist/liberal philosophy, so when very rarely they do, it’s like seeing a unicorn walking down the street.

Yes, that would be nice. One that upholds its responsibility to impeach and remove this pResident for the violations of the constitution, lawlessness, and dereliction of duty.

You're right. That editorial never would have appeared in the LA Times four years ago.

Apart from a bit of chiding about unilateralism by the President -- couched in terms warning that what goes around comes around -- it seems to fall completely in line with the paper's ultra-liberal editorial position. Nothing to get excited about here.
