President Barack Obama on Thursday ordered flags to fly at half-staff at the White House and public buildings, with the US in mourning over the death of close friend and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.
Obamas proclamation, which also extended to the White House, US foreign missions, military posts, naval stations and military vessels, was valid through sunset on Monday.

Good idea.Mine flies everyday.
I like it.
The American flag should be flying at half-mast for the death of our Constitution and freedoms. If people don’t know by now who zero’s allegiance belongs to - then there truly is no hope for them. You are known by the company you keep. in this case - zero is known by those he admires.
Lol
Well this one to be precise
Half Mast for Paul Walker.
Being so un-PC is having some effect on him. He's removed that stupid COEXIST bumper sticker from his car and recently shocked me by telling us that he voted for Ted Cruz. His high-school age daughter is a cheerleader, goes to a fine Christian church and speaks with an appealing Southern accent since most of her life was spent here in Texas.
Between the Rebel flag, tweaking the father on Earth Day and living with his thoroughly Texan daughter, that Yankee liberal may be finally seeing the light. God Bless You, FRiend and thanks again for the response.
This wonk loves the residential proclamations! I generally ignore all of them and I have no intentions of lowering the flag for Mandela, as a matter of fact I won’t even put it up or maybe I will but upside down as sign of the trouble or nation is in. And by the way what the hell is it with every president every year proclaiming Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day? Do they do this with every National Holiday every year? Are we as a nation to dumb to remember these occasions without an annual proclamation?
The flag-lowering has become like those victimgroupawareness-of-the-month proclamations. Each month has a pretty long list. Abject absurdity.
Why not always fly two flags, one at the top and one at half staff. Then we can always mourn something.
Half Mast for Paul Walker.
Amen. After his death it came out he arranged to buy the $9000 engagement ring the couple he had just met chatting in the shop couldn’t afford, secretly. The shop went by his instructions to not reveal his name all this time.
And in contrast I wonder what other convicted foreign terrorist this Kenyan clown-show is planning on doing this for.
When Lady Thatcher died, I told the missus that I bet the flags would go to half mast for Mandela. She said that Obama would not dare. That’s one bet I win.
You can’t go wrong when you bet TFG will be a shameless hack.
No Proclamation or other official notice on Whitehouse.gov. Not on Whitehouse.com, either!
Trayvon’s daddy doesn’t realize that they are US FLAGS!!!
Lets all start a meme that the flag is actually at half-staff to mourn the death of the American medical industry.
Lets all start a meme that the flag is actually at half-staff to mourn the death of the America we once knew.
That reminds me. I should start a savings account specifically for the festivities when Obama dies. That has to be an epic blowout.
Mine will fly high and mighty.
The only place I saw anything indicating the flag should be at half mast are AFP and Huffington Post, neither of which I find particularly persuasive.
In the mean time, there is still nothing on the White House website of any of my other usual sources of information.
BTW, remember to fly your flag at half-mast tomorrow in rememberance of Pearl Harbor Day.
This hardline communist was once listed as a terrorist by the USA. Once a terrorist and now worm food.
Nope. I think Mandella’s was a great man, but I won’t lower my flag for a foreign leader. I guess if our President bows to them he expects us to. Not happening at my house.
I’d fly mine at half-staff since it’s over land. Flags fly at half-mast over water and the terms are not interchangeable.
