Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday.
Mandela was 95.
"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."
"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."
Mandela will have a state funeral. Zuma ordered all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.
Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.
Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

Mandela never testified to them, no member of his terror group did. None of them was ever in danger of being prosecuted by the ANC government of course.
And such is the case in South Africa. While the idea of Apartheid is not compatible with our ideas of freedom, the “answer” that Mandela had was worse. Worse for the blacks as well.

Thanks for that list. When I was in high school, I recall thinking that the use of terrorism was okay to “fight a war” because the terrorists didn’t have the weapons that their government had. And also wrongly equated it to the Patriots fighting the British.
Now that I’m older, I realize what an idiot I was. Bombing a grocery store filled with innocents is not the same as ambushing the British on their way to Concord.
Flags at half staff for Mandela but not for Maggie Thatcher, which is just so wonderfully wonderful, I’m speechless!

To me, the biggest clue is the overtone of monomaniacal excess whenever the Enemedia is lionizing its heroes. For the next two weeks we will be deluged with noise about the guy, with the implication that all the while, nothing of consequence is taking place in the world.
Just like this POS/POTUS, he ain’t white; that’s the trump card that excludes them from their truths.
And Mandela’s truth isn’t the fable it’s made out to be. But some of us know that.
