Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday.
Mandela was 95.
"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."
"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."
Mandela will have a state funeral. Zuma ordered all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.
Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.
Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

I for one am glad your commie hero is rotting in hell as of today.
Mandela was 95.
"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said.
I believe this terrorist communist, unrepentant sinner is doing neither of these. But instead is dwelling in Hell in outer darkness, filled with unspeakable torment, weeping & knashing of teeth.
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. Jesus is the only way, the truth & the life. No man cometh to the Father except by accepting Jesus as Savior. I never heard of any sincere confession or conversion from Mandela.
Nelson Mandela now belongs only to the ground. Get him there quickly.
Terrorists should never die of old age ........
A devout communist has died.
Whatever.
RIP
The murder rate has dropped since the end of apartheid.
I know I remember reading that he was a communist, ran with communists, and thought like a communist.
“resting in peace”? I believe that is a typo...the dead commie terrorist is “roasting in peace”.
“The murder rate has dropped since the end of apartheid.”
Not even close.

thanks for that post. it spoke to me...maybe i will temper my attitude around my co-workers tomorrow, who are going to be in complete idol worship about mandela.
I accidentally landed on some MSM channel and heard the following:
DIANE SAWYER: He LOVED FOOD!!!!! “
ROBIN ROBERTS: And thaat SMILE!!!!!!”
“Im very much afraid that South African whites will discover that Mandela was all that kept the lid on wholesale race wars and expropriation. “
I am thinking Yugoslavia after Tito.
Once when Mandela was visiting here a local tv news reader described Mandela as an “African American African”. I kid you not.
I do not condone his early years, but I understand his circumstances were beyond my comprehension. Anger was a logical emotion, but he rose above it even if he embraced the wrong form of government. Like much of Africa, it will take generations to change if the stars align because tribalism is difficult to overcome. America was a unique experiment in freedom and unity of purpose and our template does not fit elsewhere for many reasons.
Speak your mind FRiend. The world is often many shades of grey even when we seek to view it in black and white. No place was more grey than South Africa and Mandela reflected that, but I applaud how he finished his life despite my disagreements. He was a very notable figure that will forever be celebrated and demonized. There were atrocities committed by both sides, but I won’t argue with any man who seeks freedom. Perhaps the truth lies in there somewhere, only God knows.
