FAA allowing most electronic device use throughout flights
CNN ^ | 10-31-13 | Jason Hanna and Katia Hetter

Airplane travelers will soon be able to watch videos and play games with their electronic devices throughout their entire flight -- and not just above a certain altitude -- the Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday in a long anticipated announcement.

But don't expect to be chatting on your cell phone. A ban on using cell phones for voice communication remains in effect.

The FAA, following months of study by a group of aviation experts, said that airlines can soon allow passengers to use portable electronic devices such as tablets, laptop computers, e-readers and cell phones in airplane mode throughout the flight -- with some circumstantial restrictions.

It’s good that they are still going to ban talking on cell phones.

Can you imagine the beatdown it would be to endure a three-hour flight with everyone around you yapping non stop the whole way?

One of the problems with cell phones is that no one else wants to listen to some morons cell phone conversation.

Another example of the federal government’s over regulation of private industry in the United States.

How does any government agency "allow" anything?

No part of the federal government is "allowed" to do anything other than what the people "allow".

We played around with electronic devices on the bizjet I flew. Didn’t notice anything interfering with our glass FMC instruments. But then I’m no electronic person.

The further away the person you’re calling the louder you have to speak. Right?

It is the FAA way. Anything they haven't made somebody spend a bunch of money testing might be dangerous.

They currently won't write STCs for aircraft mounted laser rangefinders, even though the lasers are classified eye-safe.

Yeah thats bad enough on ground in the stores...

but I don’t put up with the disturbance...

Why is it that I can be silently shopping in say Walmart and stop half way along a quiet aisle to look at say different brands of peas..

stopped I said alone quiet peaceful aisle halfway along...that’s in the middle..

OK down the aisle comes another person often a woman....all the way down that long aisle to almost the middle

the women stops right in front of the cans of corn 6-10 feet from me and without a byyourleave pulls out her cellphone..

and starts to shout into the d instrument as though she or the recipient are deaf..

well if you know me well enough Ive been an old curmudgeon since I turned 50 and realized I didn’t have to take it any more...

Im 65 next week so I have this down pat..

“HOW ARE YOU???” shouts my neighborintheaisle

“Oh sez I “fine thanks” in a normal voice that uglymanners has to hear shes so close (mind you men do this to me too)

“WHATCHA DOIN?”

“Oh just shopping. Trying to think amongst the noise”

“WHATCHA DOIN TOMORROW???”

“Oh I thought I might just go cellphone hunting”

Now if I hear “WHATCHA WANNA DO THAT FOR ??” and I have I often cant help laughing out loud..

“Cause its relaxing and recreational to shoot cellphones”

But they CONTINUE and I continue until finally they either realize the person right next to them is answering their words or they wander in their daze back down the aisle still SHOUTING..

The ones that used to get me the most were times when a stranger right next to me starts talking to me looking right at me about some subject I don’t recognize and theres no cellphone cementing their hand to their ear..

you know the ear piece thingy..

For while there there was seemingly a conspiracy to drive me mad...

:)

Eliminating stupid, pointless restriction on liberty is usually good news.

Now I can read or listen to audio as I see fit for myself as an adult. I don’t need to shut down everything 30 minutes before landing just because the lazy crew wants to get things cleaned up for a nice long break before we get below 10,000 feet.

One little petty tyranny by the wayside.

Very good news - the electronic ban was pretty ridicuous and had been shown to be ridiculous years ago. The cell phone use ban DOES have some potential effect on freqs used on takeoff and approach, but even teh FCC realized we are not all that interested in listening to folks blabbing away on their phones mid-flight.

I can surely imagine how nice it is that I don’t have to spend a sizable fraction of my life sitting on airplanes anymore!

Banning cellphone usage on planes is good but it should not be a govt. directive. The airline should decide. I would seek out air carriers that disallowed cellphone calls while in flight and I’m certain lots of other people would too.
