ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Good morning this rainy Sunday! This morning someone asked me, "How do you like the lousy weather, Chaplain?" I thought a moment about the fact that my uniform was wet, my car had trouble starting, and about all those poor people stuck in the wall of traffic that inevitably occurs when 58 gets drenched. Then later I thought, how would we exist without the rain which makes all life on our planet possible? I remembered the old prayer in my prayer book, a blessing to God for the gift of wind and rain.

There is an old story, a beautiful story, about a boy who came home famished after long hours of play with his friends. His mother served him some sandwiches which satisfied his hunger and caused him to thank his mom. She said, "Don't thank me, son, I only prepared the food." So he went to the grocer to thank him for the bread. "Don't thank me, young man, I only sell the food." He walked over to the baker and thanked him. "Son, you're thanking the wrong person, I only bake the bread." Wondering whom to thank, the boy went to the farmer to thank him. "Thank you for the fine bread that I eat every day," he said. "Don't thank me, my friend, I only plant the seeds. The earth, sunshine, rain, and wind make the wheat grow, not I.

By now the boy was tired and hungry so the farmer invited him to join his family for dinner. As they were seated around the table, each person took a piece of bread from the basket and said together: Praised be Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who brings bread out of the earth."

So, today, let's thank God for the sunny days and the rainy ones, too--as well as for the food He gives us. Each day is truly a blessing!

Chaplain Mitch Schranz

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine
feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

God Waiting

December 1, 2013

During the Christmas season we wait. We wait in traffic. We wait in checkout lines to purchase gifts. We wait for family to arrive. We wait to gather around a table filled with our favorite foods. We wait to open presents lovingly chosen.

All of this waiting can be a reminder to Christians that Christmas is a celebration of waiting for something much more important than holiday traditions. Like the ancient Israelites, we too are waiting for Jesus. Although He already came as the long-awaited Messiah, He has not yet come as ruler over all the earth. So today we wait for Christ’s second coming.

Christmas reminds us that God also waits . . . He waits for people to see His glory, to admit that they are lost without Him, to say yes to His love, to receive His forgiveness, to turn away from sin. While we wait for His second coming, He waits for repentance. What seems to us like God’s slowness in coming is instead His patience in waiting (2 Peter 3:9).

The Lord is waiting to have a relationship with those He loves. He made the first move when He came as baby Jesus and the sacrificial Lamb. Now He waits for us to welcome Him into our lives as Savior and Lord.

God patiently keeps His promises.

Nice Menorah. Aren’t the candles wrong though?

Shouldn’t they be at different heights?

Thank You for the lovely Menorah!
Happy Chanukah! :-)

Hey...I just wrote a move review...I’ll share it with my FRiends...

here Goes:

Les Miserables (1 star)

I waited for this movie for over 25 YEARS and was SO disappointed.

I have seem the stage musical twice, as well as the huge 25th anniversary concert version, and as a music teacher, my vocal students perform the songs frequently. So, I was very excited about the release of this film version.

As soon as the crazy CGI dry-dock scene started up, with the poorly-mixed music and the wan, anemic singing, I was instantly put off. Then it was one dark, gloomy, muddy poorly mixed scene after another, with mumbled lyrics and phony British accents that got more “cockney” as the poor souls’ social class was diminished . At one point, I needed subtitles, and if I did not already know the score by heart, I would NOT have known what was being said.

Why is muddy, out of focus camera work and mumbled dialogue considered “Artistic”?

And THEN, when Jean Valjean’s prayerful and contemplative “Bring Him Home” came up, Jackman belted and declaimed the song as if he were Ethel Merman trying to reach the second balcony! Ugh!

The last straw was the “Sewer Scene”, though. I mean, we all KNOW what floats along in the sewers, but really...

The orchestrations were problematic as well. Once again, they were muddy and poorly mixed, with flat dynamics. Even a little 16 piece High School production pit orchestra has better dynamics. there was no sparkle or brilliance to the music...and I played it through 15” Woofers, High frequency horns and a powerful stereo amp.

I felt soiled after sitting through this movie.

Sorry to be so negative. I will have to catch the next live performance (Maybe the local high school will be doing it) to get back my love for this musical.

I hope someone “important” reads your honest review.

How sad that after waiting and waiting it was such a disappointment....and as a music teacher it has to have been worse. ((HUGS))

A Blessed Lord’s Day and Shavua Tov to you and yours, ML.

Did you and Lynn-Duh get out and find good stuff today?

Choir practice?

Lynn-dah and i went to a few sales before the heavens opened and a deluge began. It is the last day of Hurricane Season, so Mother nature just HAD to pitch a fit!

Anyway, I got some soapstone candlesticks and an African hand-drum from the Land-of-the-Lyin’-King’s-Birth (Kenya), some scented candles, a couple of gourd maracas, and a Peruvian Flute.

BTW, I sold the violin for 2X what I paid for it.

Which is a good thing, because i have to make a vet appt for Lynn-Dah. She is having a little problem with the aft-end, common to doggies, unfortunately.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.
