OBAMA REMOVES 'GOD' FROM GETTYSBURG ADDRESS
Breitbart ^ | 11/19/13 | by LARRY O'CONNOR

Washington DC talk show host Chris Plante reported today that Barack Obama omitted the words "under God" from the Gettysburg Address when reciting the great speech for a Ken Burns documentary.

Burns had filmed all living presidents as well as various Hollywood personalities and luminaries to pay homage to the speech which was delivered by Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago, today.

Plante broke the story on Washington DC talk radio station WMAL on his mid-morning program, "The Chris Plante Show."

So here's the defense you're going to hear on this (I predict). Obama was using an early draft of the speech (written by John G. Nicolay, President Lincoln's personal secretary). In fact, he read this word for word.

Note the difference between this initial version and the accepted, spoken one....

NICOLAY: "It is rather for us, the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom"

LINCOLN: "It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom"

My opinion is that Obama specifically chose this early draft because of its omission of the phrase UNDER GOD.

So 0bama didn’t read the version that’s written on the Lincoln Memorial?

Sounds like something Jay Carney would say.

On the website for the reading it notes they specifically asked him to read from a version omitting God.

Wonder why?

Allow me to correct myself, Lincoln wrote ALL of the versions. This initial version is referred to as the NICOLAY version as it was given to Lincoln’s personal secretary.

I’m glad he decided not to go to Gettysburg. He would have defiled that sacred ground.

Why wouldn’t 0bama have read what Lincoln actually said in his speech?

There are several different contemporary drafts of the speech. Some have “under God”, some don’t. Which version he actually said is not known for sure.

Riiight. 56 other people recited it the same way. Only the turd in the punch bowl didn't.

He won't get a pass from me.

I was unaware of the uncertainty. Did no one ask Helen Thomas before she passed?

I don’t quite understand, contemporary drafts? What he said in his speech at Gettysburg is what he said at Gettysburg, it can’t be changed.

I’m definitely not a religious guy, but am offended that 0bama would remove “under God” from his recitation because it’s offensive to the vast majority of Americans who believe in God and because it was a part of the speech as given by Lincoln. A proper recitation is all that was asked of Zero and he couldn’t even get that right. What a horrible person! I’m to the point where I’d be okay with Biden taking over for the rest of the 2nd term.

I tend to agree with you. However, although there may be multiple drafts, there is only ONE version of the Gettysburg Address, and that is the one actually DELIVERED at Gettysburg.

Obama recited the initial draft version, word for word. (The NICOLAY version as referenced in the link you provided). As I stated above, I believe he chose this version intentionally as it did not contain the phrase UNDER GOD. Obviously, that's my opinion, as would be guessing at his intention for doing this. He could be placating his base, who hates Him and His Word, or he chose this version because Obama himself hates Him.

I know what I think the reason was.

Interesting given that of the five copies written by Lincoln himself the first two drafts (the Nicolay and Hay copies, respectively) lacked “under God”. The later three copies (Everett, Bancroft and Bliss copies -the Bliss copy being the one Lincoln signed and dated) did have it.

The argument may be that since there’s no conclusive proof of what Lincoln actually spoke, they decided to go with the wording of the two drafts rather than the three post speech copies.
