BOSTON (AP) -- Massachusetts' top insurance official said Monday that the state won't allow consumers to keep health insurance policies that fall below the minimum requirements of the federal health care law.

State Insurance Commissioner Joseph Murphy said in a letter sent Monday to the Obama administration that substandard insurance policies are "virtually non-existent" in Massachusetts because of its first-in-the-nation health care law that took effect in 2007.

This is a likely outcome for most states, frankly. If I were an Attorney General in a state that had that question, allow continuance of an insurance plan that is ILLEGAL by Federal Law (ACA), I’d advise the top state officer (Governor) to follow established law, regardless of what Idi Amin DaDa Obama says he’s gonna do. It does not absolve the state from liability from lawsuits re: allowing its citizens to be harmed (in any manner they choose to litigate).

He would have. He would have used the power of the Federal purse as an incentive for the states to all adopt Romneycare. And he might have had a federal tax credit instead of a mandate penalty. The math works the same but one is more acceptable.

Better that socialism comes from the democrats than from Rinos.

Blue State Red State divide widens more each day under Obama the unifier.

I thought RomneyCare was better then O-care and people were already forced to use that?

After visiting Boston, part of me has a fantasy of moving to MA. Then I read posts like yours (and articles like this) and realize even though I could survive being surrounded by liberals, we could not financially survive. Can’t even get a shack for the price of our small 1200 sq. foot house anywhere within an hour of BOS.

I think that’s what’s being said here. RomneyCare is “better” (or at least more stringent) than ObamaCare, so old “substandard” policies won’t be uncancelled.

Remember that ObamaCare is a floor. Nothing stopping states from going beyond it.

I am also a resident, and about 7 years ago I was out of work for some time and the state was going to force me to buy health Insurance that I could not afford, so I didn’t, well, because, I couldn’t. I love this area of the country, and jobs are a-plenty here (lots of high-tech and health-care jobs) so as difficult as it is to be surrounded by liberal zombies, the Northeast is a great place to be. I have had to limit my exposure to the uniformed socialist agenda, but am also pretty quick to put them in their place with real facts. It’s kind of fun, actually.

Massachusetts' 2006 health care law became the blueprint for the federal law signed by Obama in 2010

What a crock.

Pelosi and Reid's bill was a huge grab bag of garbage thrown in by every left-wing kook in DC.

There was no blueprint...just the actions of a bunch of nuts who wanted whatever they could get from the goodie-box.

I do not know whether my policy will renew or not. Currently with a $3000 annual deductible I pay $17500 p.a. for my BCBSMA policy. So essentially I pay $20,000+ per year for medical expenses for 2 healthy 64 year olds.

Don’t move to Boston.

I had to move back to Boston. As part of that move, I’m on Romneycare. It costs me $250 less per month for better insurance than I had in California.

I’m not promoting Romneycare. Just telling you what the numbers worked out to be.

The actual mechanics don’t matter - Obama made the gesture, so in the liberal mind he’s off the hook.

The arrogance in this interview, aka we do it better here bla bla bla. No you don't Mass... Does anyone here listen to Howie Carr? He has been on a screed how Romneycare is costing the State a fortune and they are cutting back everywhere and won't talk about old police cars, deferred maintenance of State and Muni assets as the State of Mass goes broke...

Murphy said in an interview that about 100,000 Massachusetts residents will need to change to what he called a slightly modified health insurance plan. For example, some consumers might have to change to a lower deductible, he said.

Gosh, that's a reassuring example. You have to wonder, however, at what the real figures are: how many people's premiums will increase, and how many people's deductible will go up? The Guv could have shared that data with us, because it's certainly available. Wonder why he didn't?

My own, personal advice: DON’T come to Massachusetts.

I’d leave if I had someplace to go where there were friends and family and, just as important, a significant ratio of conservatives.

I’m old enough now that I have one foot in the grave, but this is no place for someone starting out, or even in middle age.

Glad you’re enjoying yourself; me, I hate it.

But I’m an Old Man, I’ve lived here all my life, and I just can’t see pulling up stakes and going someplace else for the few years I have left.

Still, I constantly dream of Texas, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana... places like that - wide open spaces with no dippy liberals breathing down my neck.

Don't even THINK of moving to Red England; especially Assachsuetts. It's a 'tar baby'...you move there; then you can't get away. My wife and I had some relatively mild medical issues which have now become life-threatening due to the STRESS of dealing with the people. (Why am I here? The same reason other southerners are here...frickin' in-laws.) I do not wish to die on Red England soil, but I fear with each passing day that I will never get away.

Save yourself...and your family.

“Actually, I think the point is that if you live in Mass you already take it in the nether regions.”

not if you’re like a third generation welfare recipient.
you get the best medical care in the world for free, free housing, food stamps, cash allowance, obamaphone, and a boston media that never does a negative story about it.

“Trumps” is a better word. Here in the Gay-State, we’re seeing an exodus of capable doctors, mitigated only by the fact that we have so many excellent medical schools locally. The situation will continue to get worse unless the AHCA is repealed.
