Madrid Buried In Trash As Garbagemen Strike Continues For 10th Day
Business Insider ^ | 11/15/2013 | Tyler Durden

The trouble with proclaiming 'victory' over the crisis in Spain (read the whole of Europe) and the ECB enabling governments profligacy with the ghost of OMT future is that it merely emboldens. As Al Jazeera reports, Madrid's garbage collectors have been on strike since November 5 to protest layoffs and pay cuts. With garbage piling up on the streets of Madrid, the mayor issued private trash-collecting companies an ultimatum on Wednesday: end the street cleaners' strike or lose their contracts. More than 30,000 residents have signed a petition to the defense minister asking for the streets to be cleaned. The following images show the chaos...

Some expressed their frustration with the strike:
Translation: The Madrid Cleaning Strike shouldn't be called a strike; it's vandalism and crime. This is how you lose the argument.

Seems to us that this might be a great opportunity to put some of the record high unemployed youth back to work... (though one wonders just how big the disincentive to work is in Spain...)

I’d like to see them try this in Barcelona or Seville.
They are lovely cities and the people like to keep it that way.

If they try this in Barcelona, this will only make the growing secession movement stronger.

On September 11 2012, a pro-independence march pulled in a crowd of between 600,000 (according to the Spanish Government), 1.5 million (according to the Guardia Urbana), and 2 million (according to its promoters).

Poll results revealed that half the population of Catalonia (where Barcelona belongs) supported secession from Spain.

I don’t think so. Barcelona is very unionized, particularly through municipal unions, and they are very left wing. Street violence by “workers” has a long history up there.

You’d think there would be an opportunity here.
Drive up a truck - put up a sign - “Trash removal $x000 Euros.”

They can contribute, or pledge - when the amount is reached you bring in a crew and remove the trash.

It would be interesting to see if the locals think it is important enough pay.

RE: Drive up a truck - put up a sign - “Trash removal $x000 Euros.”

But can this business survive the union thugs?

But then of course it was too late
The garbage reached across the state
From New York to the Golden Gate
And there in the garbage she did hate
Poor Sara met an awful fate
Which I cannot right now relate
Because the hour is much too late...
But children, remember Sara Stout
And ALWAYS take the garbage out!

"Meanwhile, the population exploded, and intelligence continued to decline until humanity was incapable of solving even it's most basic problems. Like garbage, which had been stacked for centuries with no plan whatsoever leading to the Great Garbage Avalanche of 2505, which would set in motion the events that would change the world forever."

This was tried during the NY strike. The dump sites were closed too so if you had a truck load of trash you couldn’t dump it and you couldn’t return it to the street.

Hmmm.
I think, if they pony up the Euros, I might be able to afford a set of bolt cutters.

I did too, briefly when I lived in a rural area. The yellow pages had a lot of choices and the prices were not unreasonable.

26.4% - if you’re under 25 it’s 56%. Just damn.
