Pete never gambled with his life - using steroids and drugs - in order to set an illegitimate record. He gambled on his own team to win. He had a gambling addiction. Lots of people do.
Holding a grudge for the sake of holding a grudge is unhealthy. His record as a player stands and he’s been used as a bad example long enough. Murderers get out of prison in less time than Pete has been disgraced.
I agree. If fans cannot trust that the game is on the up-and-up, then baseball is no better than wrestling.
But baseball lost its integrity when the juiced up players started shattering the records of past players.

They only thing Rose doesn’t have in the Hall is his bust and the satisfaction of knowing he was voted in.
And, trust me, as a student of the game Pete Rose knew who Shoeless Joe Jackson was.

I don’t care either way. However, the excuse not to let him back in better not be ‘to keep integrity in the game.’ What integrity?
I understand the idea of that, but I think the " people that live on the wrong side of the law" line was crossed a long time ago in many more ways than gambling. In a sense pro sports has become much like Washington DC where some laws are posted as window dressing but no one really concerns themselves about it all that much.

Yes to Hall of Fame, but he should not be allowed to give a speech at the ceremony.
My son and I met Bob Feller several times and asked him about Rose. He said with all the rules in baseball, only a couple are posted in EVERY clubhouse and one of them is about gambling.
Every baseball fan that is worthy of being called a baseball fan knows about Rose and will pass that on. It doesn’t matter if he will ever get in. The reason the baseball hall is better than other halls of fame is because they care enough about it enough to not have a rule that says a minimum number of players absolutely have to go in each year. Things like not having Rose in only add to the worth of actually getting in. Any other sport/endeavor he would have probably been in a while ago, in my opinion.

There is a plaque next to Bob Feller’s crew berth on the USS Alabama in Mobile. And of course a statue of him outside Jacobs Field (it will always be Jacobs Field).
He was what baseball should be about. A HOF player and person all the way.
I always thought the Hall of Fame was intended to recognize the game’s great players. He was certainly that. Banning him from the game for life is more than sufficient punishment for his offense. Let’s not also pretend he wasn’t a great player. Waiting until he dies borders on being petty and vindictive, IMO.
