U.S. doctors urge wider use of cholesterol drugs
The Washington Times ^ | November 13, 2013 | Marilynn Marchione - Associated Press

For decades, if you asked your doctor what your odds were of suffering a heart attack, the answer would turn on a number: your cholesterol level.

Now the nation’s first new heart disease prevention guidelines in a decade take a very different approach, focusing more broadly on risk and moving away from specific targets for cholesterol.

The guidance offers doctors a new formula for estimating risk that includes age, gender, race and factors such as whether someone smokes.

How long have you been taking it and how did you hear about it?

What would a doctor do to rid the body of the fungus?

I have familial lipid disorder. My grandfather died at 47 of heart disease and my father died of a MI at 66. I have several other relatives who had various bypasses and vascular surgeries at relatively young ages.

I've been taking relatively high doses of statins since I noticed a yellowish patch (xanthelasma) on my eyelid. Since I've been taking statins, the yellow patch has completely disappeared. I'd guess that the same process is happening in my arteries. Given my family history, I don't think I have much to lose by taking a statin. The worst that might happen is that I could die prematurely -- which was going to happen anyway without statins.

I started taking fish oil a couple of years ago and my cholesterol levels dropped.

Roughly half the cholesterol panel members have financial ties to makers of heart drugs... 44% of men and 22% of women would meet their threshold.

Gosh, what's wrong with this picture?

"I started taking fish oil a couple of years ago and my cholesterol levels dropped."

Your triglyceride levels should drop like a rock but I don't know why cholesterol would...In fact, it has pretty conclusively been shown to raise HDL cholesterol (the good kind).

Yes - triglycerides went down (185 to 130). Oddly, I started taking it for other reasons, and was surprised to see it happen. My overall number went from 231 to 197. HDL went from 43 to 56, and LDL went from 131 to 115.

My diet didn't get better, and I think I exercise a little less. (Bad, I know...)

It’s simple, documented and there are plenty of You-Tubes you can watch where doctors explain why it works..............

Add “increases blood sugar” to your list. Statins are not beneficial for diabetics.

I'm beginning to think ObamaCare's flaws are irrelevant. It isn't safe to take the typical AMA doctor's drug company-sponsored advice any more, whether or not you can afford to pay his bill.

On 20mg Simvastatin, 500mg Niacin and 500mg Fish Oil

LDL 83
HDL 60
Triglycerides 176

Exercise brings down the TriGlycerides when I do it

Take Statins at your own risk!

As a Home Health Care Worker I will attest to the fact that we have an enormous problem with patients becoming over medicated and hooked on a wide variety of “easy” pharmaceutical solutions to their “Lifestyle” driven medical problems.

Stop eating crappy food America!

Start Moving your Bodies in Meaningful Ways!

Synthetic witches brew “medications” combined with poor lifestyle choices (diet/exercise) will destroy your quality of life.

Since brain matter is largely made of cholesterol and similar tissues, the widespread use of statins could explain the easily documented increasing stupidity of the American Electorate.

How long was it before you noticed any difference and did it keep it away for any length of time? I just start taken statins and am in the progress of changing everything about my life , dietary and phyiscally. I have the lipid growths on both eyes and wont’ desperately for them to go away.... if not forever at least for awhile so I can finally date again.... I hate having them.
