Boehner dashes hopes of immigration talks

House Republicans will not negotiate over the Senate’s immigration reform bill, Speaker John Boehner said, dealing another blow to the chances of an overhaul being signed into law this year.

“Frankly, I’ll make clear, we have no intention of ever going to conference on the Senate bill,” Boehner told reporters Wednesday morning.

The remarks are a major setback for immigration reform advocates. Many proponents of reform thought that if the House passed small-bore, tightly-focused immigration bills, it would create a pathway for a formal negotiation with the Senate’s bill. But conservatives have balked at entering into negotiations, because they fear ending up with a bill that is dominated by the Senate’s priorities.

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told immigration activists last week in Bakersfield, Calif., that there would be no immigration legislation on the floor this year.

Republican leaders are struggling to figure out how to move forward on immigration reform — a policy that that stirs deep emotions from the right but could serve to expand the party’s popularity with minorities.

Before Boehner spoke at the press conference, he was accosted by a pair of young immigration advocates on Wednesday morning at Pete’s Diner — the Hill fixture where Boehner is a regular for breakfast. The speaker indicated to them that he is still working on getting reform bills through the House.

The two teenage girls who approached Boehner told him personal stories about how U.S. immigration laws affected their families, with one – Carmen Lima – telling Boehner about her father who was deported.

I don't trust Boehner. He may be working with McCain to pass this in the next session after the primaries, or even after the election in a lame-duck session.

However, if this pans out and we kill immigration reform yet again, we will have gone a long way to preserving the republic.

"Republican leaders are struggling to figure out how to move forward on immigration reform "

Uh, I'd suggest starting with a patrolled Fence system along the whole border.

Why push anything in the House.

Let Obamacare implode and take up all the news.

Here’s hoping he’s been reading internal polls from his district that is all but certain it will tank him if he doesn’t remember he represents a Sovereign America.

Realli??? Secure the damn borders! No struggle to figure that out. Dear Senate, we tried it your way once. You convinced Reagan to go along and then you reneged. Fool me once ... and all that. This time, secure FIRST and trust US about some sort of amnesty.

But there is such a rich diversity with the inclusion of these unrecognized Americans-in-Principle. A rich heritage of hard work, inclusionism and loyalty working ever onward to advance America and its strength, (blah...blah, blah.......)

I’m sorry, I just can’t keep this up.... never mind...

Exactly. All immigration would do now is take the focus off this current debacle and start another which in no way would be helpful to the GOP with the voters.

A country that cannot secure its borders is not a country.

Republican leaders are struggling to figure out how to move forward on immigration reform

Translation:

Republican leaders are struggling to figure out how to capitulate to the Democrats on immigration reform and still get their traitorous incumbents re-elected.

Its so easy, isn’t it? That is what America wants, not just conservatives. If they would secure the border, I think they would find much less resistance to doing something with the ones that are already here. But I am sure they could screw that up as well, like making it so anyone who came here illegally can automatically bring family, distant and near, to the U.S.

Here in OH, the unemployment of minority youth is staggering. Established immigrants and recent citizens need jobs. I can't understand how any of our politicians would want to do anything but decrease the destabilizing effect the invasion has had on OH.

Besides which, there's the practical issue. OH has more than enough invaders if jobs come up who speak English, are very well educated, have trades, work hard, slip easily into established communities. They don't end up collecting handouts. They're eastern European, Pali/Lebanese/Iraqi, SE Asian, some hispanic groups. It makes no sense for OH legislators to not want to "stop illegal immigration" and clean up the gene pool of those coming, so to speak. So, yeah, I'm hopeful Boehner will stand firm on this one.

Am I being too blunt?
