Showdown in Seattle: Boeing vs. Union
American Thinker ^ | 11/11/2013 | Thomas Lifson

A dramatic showdown is underway in the State of Washington, pitting Boeing against its largest labor union, the International Association of Machinists (IAM). If the union, voting Wednesday, rejects a proposed contract that includes lower health care benefits, Boeing is threatening to move production of its next generation airliner, the 777X, out of the Puget Sound region, to such locations as Charleston, SC (where it is assembling the new 787) or Texas, right-to-work states where the union's demands would hold no sway.

The Washington State Legislature takes Boeing's threats very seriously, indeed. Boeing has long complained about the tax burden Washington State imposed on it, on the theory that the company's dominance of the civil airliner business made it a golden goose whose eggs belonged in the coffers of the state as much as they belonged to the shareholders. But with the rise Airbus Industrie, that dominance no longer can be taken for granted, and Boeing caused deep shock when it opened its plant in South Carolina. Over the weekend, the State Senate and then the House passed a $9 billion tax break

Boeing has been bashed by unions and trashed in the news by the Seattle Times. Now when Boeing is threatening to move they’re all whimpery.

Funny you should say that, just saw a big auction ad for all the machinery, vehicles, etc from a couple of “former” Hostess locations.

RE: Boeing moved its Headquarters to Chicago.

So, Did they discover that Chicago is better than Seattle in terms of the business climate?

Is Illinois better than Washington State? I highly doubt that.

Illinois (shockingly!) is the home of high taxes and tax “waivers” for crony capitalist friends.

It’s where Caliph Baraq learned his craft.
Reward your friends and punish your enemies.

California chased it’s airline industry out of the state the same way.

Come on in, Boeing! The South is ready and willing to accept your union-free industry. No more pot-smoking liberals and unions.

More convenient for them. They have divisions all over the US and being in Chicago centralized it for them. When it’s 2am in Seattle the east cost divisions were closing down for the day. Moving corporate to Chicago was no big deal. Manufacturing still stayed in the Puget Sound are.

“Boeing is pretty much the only thing keeping Washington from being a total Leftist $hit hole.”

Sorry, but with or without Boeing, Washington, and Seattle in particular, IS a $hithole, with the exception of the eastern part of the state where all the conservatives live! The last time I was there, they had signs up with a toll free number asking you to rat out any motorist you saw in the HOV lane that was using it in violation of their stupid HOV law. Just like it used to be in the USSR. No wonder all the “coffee companies” started in Seattle, the people there all look like they are on Prozac.

“California chased it’s airline industry out of the state the same way.”

While I assume you meant airCRAFT industry, you are nevertheless correct. Only a former Douglas Plant (now Boeing) remains in Long Beach building McDD legacy aircraft. Also I had a close relative who worked as an engineer at the UAL maintenance base at SFO for a short period of time. He told me about the days where all the IAM idiots spent the day “dropping tools” on the concrete floor to “protest” some “grievance.” They acted like children. With that, and a brain-dead “management team,” he left in six months totally disgusted with both the company and the union.
