White racists more likely to be gun owners: study

Are gun ownership and racism linked?

Researchers have found that the more racist beliefs held by a white person, the more likely the person is to own a gun — conclusions that have rankled gun rights advocates.

A team led by Kerry O'Brien, of Monash University in Australia and The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, examined white Americans’ negative perceptions about blacks and compared the rates of both gun ownership and opposition to gun control to discover the correlations.

Researchers based their conclusions on the results of a multiple-choice questionnaire that measured responses to a series of statements about attitudes toward black people. The more strongly a person agreed with a statement, the more points they accumulated.

The total points were then averaged to come up with a score between one and five that determined “symbolic racism.” Researchers found that the more points a person accumulated, the greater their chances of owning a gun and of opposing gun control.

The report, published in the peer-reviewed online publication PLoS One, said that for each one-point increase “there was a 50 percent increase in the odds of having a gun in the home and a 28 percent increase in support for policies allowing people to carry concealed guns.”

While symbolic racism, which is a subtle but modern measure of anti-black racism, was associated with higher rates of gun ownership, researchers also attempted to identify signs of overt racism, which did not appear to have any correlation to gun ownership.

The study used data collected through the American National Election Studies — an academically run survey of U.S. voters — but only sought to measure white respondents beliefs ...

Whites more likely to own and have the receipt.

These people are following the gun laws.

Those non-racist Blacks are simply gunning folks in the hood down. No problem there. Who are the Whites gunning down? (Play Jeopardy music now...)

Does anyone besides me realize how idiotic the premise of this article is. Whites outnumber Blacks in the nation at least 5, perhaps as much as 6 or 7 times to one.

Which group owns more guns? LMAO, this is a whacked out premise.

All you gun owners out there. You have to be a racist, or you wouldn’t own those guns. My you are BAD BAD BAD people.

Good grief!

The headline is pretty true. That’s because black racists don’t own guns much. Their Democratic massas passed laws to deny them guns. Or they don’t own guns - they steal them. Despite the laws passed by their massas.

In other news, research has shown that members of M-13 and The Hood are more likely to have guns. Ownership is another matter, as ownership shifts a kot.

White people are buying firearms in record numbers because they have a good idea of what happens 'when the music stops'

The funny thing is, you’ll probably find black racists are WAAAY more likely to be packing heat... but their guns are not held legally, so don’t show up in the study. Think Chicago.

“...multiple-choice questionnaire that measured responses to a series of statements about attitudes toward black people.”

And here’s the key. I’ll bet that all the answers of the multiple choice questions scored positive for racism reqardless of the answer ... no answer would register 0 or negative points.

Question: Have you stopped beating your aged grandmother?
a. yes, recently. (2 points)
b. no, not yet. (4 points)
c. no, but a little less. (3 points)
d. no, but a little more. (5 points)

Now try a whole survey like this.

Exactly!

Just after the Los Angeles 1992 riots, I purchased some weapons so I could protect my family the next time.

Now folks will laugh, because I live in what is customarily thought of as a place where riot damage would not take place.

My reaction to that is, what happens when the rioters decide to pay back certain ethnic people they have a grudge against, instead of destroying their own neighborhood, as is traditionally the case? Can you buy a gum in a hurry? No! You’ll be “S” out of luck then.

So is this based on race? Frankly, yes it is. I know who the players are. So does everyone else! Is it indicative of my hatred of that race? Hell no.

I judge individuals on their individual actions. I love good people of all races, every single race on the planet.

After reading this, I’m sure I’ll be included as another White racist. That simply is not true.

Articles like this are insightful. They are not productive, or even reasoned. Some people will read it, and say, “See I told you.” It does nothing but foster hatred based on stereotypes.

The Washington Times is generally above tripe like this.

Frankly, I’m quite disappointed in their decision to publish this idiotic nonsense.

Notice it does not say gun owners more likely to be racists, it says "racists" more likely to own guns.

I scare quote "racists" because by their own admission, the "racists" are not people who have committed overtly racist acts, or who have overtly racist attitudes, they're "secret racists" under the super-secrete-dog-whistle-symbolic-racist definition. Which might mean, literally, anything at all.

Press release from the college in Australia that did the study about this:

That's fascinating. I don't see anything that provides the actual survey questions, but the link you provided says that the study was based in "symbolic racism" rather than "overt/blatant racism."

It defines "symbolic racism" thus: Symbolic racism is also related to stronger opposition to policies that may benefit black Americans, such as welfare, and greater support for policies that seem to disadvantage black Americans, such as longer prison sentences.

So basically, if a person opposes welfare and supports longer prison terms, for the purposes of this "study" they're considered racist.

Which, to me, means that this "study" was an answer (gun owners are racist) looking for supporting data.

Yet another example of the proof that only academics can come up with such incredible horse-hockey! And that it's possible to over-educate someone to the point where they'll believe something so incredibly stupid.

I can’t believe they’ve actually gotten arrogant enough to play the race card via Gun ownership. These lefty’s simply can’t understand what “going too far” really means.

This rubbish is so easy to refute it’s pitiful. I am happy these morons went to such an extreme as it will be laughed at by well over %99 of the population of this country regardless of “race”.

>>>>symbolic racism, which is a subtle but modern measure of anti-black racism<<<<

The 21st century equivalent of feeling the bumps on your head to determine personality and character.

And just for extra rich cheesiness, check out the practically inarticulate “subtle but modern” construction. The conjunction implies an exception to the rule, leaving my scratching the bumps on my head to determine how “modern” is an exception to “subtle.”

I’m also amused that “symbolic racism” only applies to “anti-black racism.” My guess is that term “symbolic” can’t apply to racism against Asians, since such a term might refer to the ideographic languages of that continent. Likewise, we couldn’t apply it to Native Americans, since it might demean pictographs on stones along rivers originally inhabited by the gentle stewards of the land. The term can’t be applied to the Jews, since those people probably have it coming anyhow.

Future generations will conclude we’re morons.
