Rand Paul: Christie Win Shows GOP Has Room for Moderates

The sweeping re-election of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie proves moderates are an integral part of the Republican Party, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says.

“There’s room in the Republican Party for moderates, like Chris Christie. They seem to be the only ones that are winning in the Northeast,” Paul told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

“The other thing that might happen in the Northeast if we had a little more libertarian-leaning Republicans, they would have a chance in the Northeast. But there’s room for moderates, like Chris Christie, and he’s got a place in the party.” …

Rand’s statements are correct. Christie is welcome on the party. We don’t exclude people like the DC establishment wants to do to base voters. I don’t think anyone has trouble with a mix of views. Right now, what’s happening is the DC party is trying to break the back of the base and destroy good people to protect their own power. The problem is on their end, not ours.

Problem is, we’re looking for conservatives.

Good luck finding one who can get elected to a state-wide office in New Jersey (or anywhere else in the northeast or the Pacific coast). I'll take a moderate over a socialist any day.

None required. Rand is as much of a flake as his father. I guess they mean well, but “road to hell...” & all that.

I can’t stand Christie. He’d make a perfect democrat.

What makes you think that?

There weren’t any conservatives that ran against Christie, anyhow. So the matter is even finding one in NJ.

‘Please read the article. The title of this is really misleading.

Among other things- Rand said the GOPe let Cuccinelli down/didn't provide support.

He said there was room for moderates in the republican party for the north east. It's not as bad as the title to this is making it sound. Read it.’

That is the correct first step.
I wonder what Republican moderates in the north east would be acceptable to Mr. Paul.

NJ can have Chris Christie...I can’t tolerate watching the ego maniac, loud mouth jerk.

Kenntucky can have Rand Paul...I can’t tolerate watching the ego maniac, loud mouth jerk (who also needs to find better help).

I want neither of these two to be the nominee to go up against whomever/whatever the Dems put out as their nominee.

I'll say that northeast republicans who are conservative are still not CONSERVATIVE ENOUGH for tea party members. That is fine, but we (northeasters) don't mind if our neighbor is gay.

What I mean is this: northeast Republicans are not as religious as typical Conservatives. I should know, but my parents when I was growing up, didn't take me to church but my parents were always supporting the Republican candidates. (My dad was an engineer for UTC, and my mom was a housewife). They knew that abortion was wrong, but they don't protest, my parents supported Nam and my brother and I campaigned for Nixon.

Today, my son doesn't care if his friends are gay (2 of his friends are) or if his friends abortion views are different then his friends. Every generation views will be different. Do I mind if my son's have friends who are gay?? No.

I am 98% Conservative...2% LIBERTARIAN Views.

I don’t, but I know that a Religious conservative will never win in the northeast. Look at membership of churches in New England.... less than 40% go to church.

Rand Paul is nowhere close to a liberal, but he is smart enough to realize that it’s going to take more than just the Tea Party to win the big elections needed to take this country back from the Democrats.

He’s certainly nowhere close to a conservative for sure.

And when RINOs win, it’s like the Democrats are in control anyhow; conservatives lose just as much. Christie runs NJ like he was a Democrat.

I don’t mind if my neighbor is gay either. I do, however, mind my kids being taught it is a really nifty lifestyle. I do mind every TV show and movie interjecting gay characters into every cast. I do mind the constant preaching regarding the (non) issue as though it is the biggest and most important focus the country has. Those sorts of insidious and insulting things I do mind.

Reagan is dead. So are the millions of white, married Reagan democrats who voted for him.

They have been replaced by millions of Mexican immigrants and a huge cohort of 18-25 year olds who weren’t really old enough to be world aware when the 9-11 attacks took place.

The reality is that the GOP has to retreat on the social issues and press on the libertarian issues and economic freedom with these young voters. I can live with married gays down the block. I can’t live with a government controlled economy that kills the work ethic and individual economic freedoms.

I’ve been saying that Rand has been turned. This statement is just one more bit of evidence.

Christie is the closest thing to a Republican who can elected to statewide office anywhere in the Northeast Corridor. What would you prefer?

Christie governs like a moderate Democrat. In that wise, he's not a Republican at all, except for his party affiliation.

So I ask you, what good is he serving for the greater cause of what we conservatives believe in? What exactly are we gaining by having him in our fold?
