On Sundays This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan argued that the tea party was a new fixture in American politics, a movement that doesnt want to usurp a major political party but eliminate it.
The comment came during a discussion of electoral forces going into the 2014 midterms, with former Bush consultant Matthew Dowd arguing that demographics were shifting in the Democratic Partys favor.
Candidates matter, ABC News Jonathan Karl responded. Theyve nominated far-right candidates.
Lesson for the tea party? Stephanopoulos asked.
A lot of people may be cruisin for a brusin, Noonan replied. Big difference for the tea party now and say 64 and Goldwater and 76 and Reagan64 and 76, Goldwater and Reagan both wanted to seize and control and win over the Republican Party. The tea party now shows signs of not wanting to win it, but of wanting to topple it over, wanting to do away with it. That is something new in our politics. Its going to get fought out over the next few years.
Oh yeah and we’re “madder than hell and not going to take it anymore...”
I don't know about the true makeup of the TP, but your definition is as right on as I've ever seen/heard it.
Anybody who isn't a Big Government liberal is far-right to them.
Dear, dear Peggy is an upstanding member of the Snooty wing of the GOPe. As she leaves middle age she’s suffering from depression caused by her realization that she is rapidly losing relevance. Things are leaving her behind and she is clearly losing whatever analysis skills she may have had. And she (possibly through wishful thinking) is clearly wrong about the Tea Party movement. Contrary to her fondest wishes, the Tea Party is well along the process of taking over her dear old Republican Party. While the rigid GOPe still has its hands on the reins of the party, their grip is loosening.
Just as in 1776, these are revolutionary times Peggy. And the revolutionaries are leaving the GOPe “loyalists” behind. Peggy, it’s been real.
“Suddenly the Tea Party is relevant again”
I just said this the other day. They must be annoyed it survived their IRS attack.
The GOP Establishment will make the most emotional speeches exploiting the anger of the voters over Obamacare, but will not act to reverse it if they have power.
They will amend it to Romneycare and beyond that the GOPe only intends to spend money at a slower rate of speed than the Dems as the fiscal train heads for the cliff.
The GOPe has a track record of not reversing the growth of government, increased spending and national debt.
The GOPe is not committed to an immediate balancing of the budget.
The GOPe supports the welfare state and entitlement only wanting to modify them and amend them, not tear them town.
The same Peggy Noonan who supported Mr. Obama in 2008? Why the hell would I listen to her?
Peggy Noonan....oh, yeah, the one who used to embarrass herself on “Hannity and Colmes” with her hair-tossing and her eye-batting and her faux-Hepburn giggle. There’s nothing sadder than an old broad who thinks she’s still a cheerleader.
As bad as zero is, maybe we dodged a bullet by Romney losing. He probably would have put all liberal RINOs in cabinet positions. Then we’d have the same thing we have now - just a little slower going down that slippery slope.
He is in a Blue State, he doesn't represent the grassroots GOP voter.
what difference at this point does it make, Peg?
Yep.
The Tea Party's primary planks, so far as I can see, are limited government, low taxes (Taxed Enough Already), honest and free markets, light regulation, and fiscal responsibility. Tea partiers are tired of the government being into everything.
I can see where Republicans and Independents can fit into the Tea Party. But Democrats? The Democrat Party is the party of big government, social engineering, interest groups, and crony capitalism. How does a Democrat fit into the Tea Party?
Even worse - the Republican House would have rubber stamped every nitwit liberal item on Romney's left-wing agenda, and the fight would have gone out of the people on our side.
It's an exercise in logic that I posted here many times during the 2012 primary, but I had few takers. I'm not the sort who likes to say "I told you so", but the political and cultural dynamics we're seeing now, are precisely what I thought they'd be if Obama won re-election.
Good question, but I did hear Rush or Hannity talking to someone who claimed to be a Democrat Tea Partier the other day. A Reagan Democrat? Who knew such a thing existed anymore?
Can’t say that I care which way it happens, Peggy, as long as it gets done.
there were plenty of dems and ex dems (that would be me) in the streets rallying with our local tea party four years ago. in fact, lofty lofgren’s supporters called us republicans and we just laughed at them.
my family is full of conservative dems who have never voted republican with one exception: Ronald Reagan.
Noonan still thinks the we need to reinstate the League of Nations. Okay, just kidding, but damn that broad is forever behind the curve.
Peggy, we’ve only be trying to swap out the GOPe leadership for a few decades. Glad you finally caught on.
And this woman gets paid for this?
I kNOw everything that need I to kNOw about Peggy NOonan after her endorsing of NObama.
NO thanks.
Right, and then burn down all the log cabins surrounding the office.
