Nation's largest landfill closing in California

The nation's largest landfill, where 130 million tons of garbage has been dumped, is closing Thursday after more than a half-century of service.

The 630-acre landfill is about 20 miles east of Los Angeles and served as a regional waste facility. Its gates are being shut because a permit for the site, which is nearly filled, expires on Halloween.

The landfill, which opened in 1957, has accepted more than a third of Los Angeles County's trash and stands as high as a 40-story building.

When I saw this headline, I'd hoped that this meant that they were closing San Francisco or Oakland...but, sadly...

Wow. Huge dump.

Maybe this 40 story landfill could become the new home for millions of LIV’s and other undesirables like the dumps in India and Brazil.

When the SHTF and the EBT’s quit working - I guarantee these dumps will become valuable real esate for Holder’s people.

Send the trash here to Indiana.

We’re eventually gonna have some awesome winter skiing once the mountain is high enough!

The photo looks more like Detroit than LA.

Maybe it represents the future of LA. . . .

I used to drive past this landfill 40 years ago. It was non-stop garbage trucks. It was amazing to watch this mountain rise and realize what was under it. Good luck with the park, guys!

They can’t close it yet. Streisand is still walking around on the streets of Malibu.

One can only hope that they have an alternate site already for when this one closes, but then this being California, who knows.

If not, it will be interesting to see what LA does with it’s mountain of trash.

50 years from now landfills will be the world’s greatest mines. Mining will be done by robots.

Hmmm. Only 0.076 cubic miles, less than a tenth . . .

One man's trash is another man's treasure . . .

(I have some stuff that is both . . . got to get rid of it . . . )
