Al Maliki Ask US for Aid in fighting Al Qaeda

Terrorists "found a second chance" to thrive in Iraq, the nation's prime minister said Thursday in asking for new U.S. aid to beat back a bloody insurgency that has been fueled by the neighboring Syrian civil war and the departure of American troops from Iraq two years ago.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told a packed auditorium at the U.S. Institute of Peace that he needs additional weapons, help with intelligence and other assistance, and claimed the world has a responsibility to help because terrorism is an international concern.

"They carry their bad ideas everywhere," al-Maliki said of terrorists. "They carry bad ideas instead of flowers."

A better course would be to ask the GCC for help.

Money is not a problem. Having Saudi/Qatari armor on the Syrian border would be a good trade for a little help massacring Al Qaeda families.

Or the Arab League. That is, if they’re so worried about flower deliveries.

U.S. and Iraqi officials see a possible solution in trying to persuade insurgents to join forces with Iraqi troops and move away from al Qaeda, following a pattern set by so-called Awakening Councils in western Iraq that marked a turning point in the war.

Problem with the above solution is Maliki betrayed the Sunni leaders of the Awakening Councils. Now he is fighting them as reactionaries.

When I say GCC, I include the Arab League. Absent the GCC I don’t think the Arab League has any strength in it’s voice.

now go back.....and be real.....when we went to Iraq, it was to keep alqueda from bouncing into Iraq AND because we knew they still had WMD. WE were right. Bush was right.

And Bush tried to make a security deal. The dingbats said....no, no, no....everything is wonderful.

One more thought.

I always say that history is a process, not an event.

Applied here, the process of transformation of the region was begun by W when he as the conquerer of Baghdad removed the threat of Saddam. By doing so he opened Iraq to new historical process. He opened Iraq to exposure to the bilateral trade with the swiftly growing commercial and industrial power of the GCC.

For a people that live by the events of the day, that is Americans, it is nigh on impossible to consider events transforming history over a much slower pace, say 10 years or so.

The investment possibilities of capital by the GCC in Iraq are huge. The natural thing for the capitalists in Dubai and Kuwait City and Riyadh is to look first at Bashra and duplicate the Royal Saudi commission magic at Yanbu/Jubail and in Qatar/UAE.

People get hung up on Islam and overlook the fact that the driving force in the region is business. The business between Iraq and the Gulf is just a matter of a few years to get going.

If Obama were W, He would take Maliki up on the request and insist on the GCC lending a hand

The SOF agreement was one piece. The other was a long-term security strategy agreement. This did not mean keeping troops there, but would have made the U.S. a regional partner with Iraq. Iraq wanted this, but since they would not budge on SOF, the Obama admin deep sixed a security agreement as well. I don’t think the Obama admin had any plans of doing so from the beginning. It was unfinished business for the GWB admin and in the transition meetings, they emphasized the importance to the Obama admin reps of a security agreement. Not having one would in effect send Maliki running to Iran for political, economic and military support and to give all the oil rights to China.
