The Food and Drug Administration is recommending new restrictions on prescription medicines containing hydrocodone, the highly addictive painkiller that has grown into the most widely prescribed drug in the U.S.
In a major policy shift, the agency said in an online notice Thursday that hydrocodone-containing drugs should be subject to the same restrictions as other narcotic drugs like oxycodone and morphine.

I have only practical arguments, and am resigned to accept fait accompli. What happened to the idea of dissolving the Energy and Education Departments that Reagan was supposed to do? 34 years ago! 34 years ago Conservatives promised us a reform of the tax code, too. FDA’s role is to make certain that medications are safe to use. If it exceeds that role, like all Fed agencies do, that’s for Congress to oversee and get under control, but to argue against its existence won’t accomplish anything.
Tylenol 3 worked okay for me after some recent dental work, but it’s not something I’d want to use regularly.
The government micromanages what it legitimately or otherwise regulates. What’s the news? Have you looked at the text in your right view mirror lately? Read food, medication, mattress labels? There are always “legitimate “ issues to do it, like the 16,500 yearly deaths in this case, that many think should have been preventable.
Your argument, again, about the ownership of your body, repeats the argument of the abortionists, which they invented. You bet nobody used that kind of logic before!
You are unfortunately spot on. DC corrupts, it corrupts completely. There really isn’t 2 political parties anymore. Just a ‘coin’ with 2 sides.....
I have only practical arguments, and am resigned to accept fait accompli.
So you have no constitutional argument to make.
It’s dangerous for one’s liver.
They have, but they're quite obviously wrong. Abortion involves a second, genetically distinct body.
Even so, we don't "own" our bodies, but neither does the government.
If they can tell what you can't take, they can tell you what you must take.
But we know that already. We've been brought there by the "we have to do something" crowd.
The WSJ article from Thursday that I mentioned above explains the situation much better than this lame report. It shows how various interests were involved and how negotiations proceeded over the past couple of years. Constitutional issues? Are you kidding? It’s not even about control, as some like to fantacize, it’s only about money, for the Big Pharma, and for their clients the pharmacists.
I just found out yesterday that Loperamide is a form of demerol that doesn’t cross the blood/brain barrier, but does effect the opioid receptors in the gut. That’s how it stops constipation.
From what I read, addicts are using it to ease the symptoms of withdrawal in an effort to get off drugs.
You do realize that many of those deaths have more to do with the acetaminophen that’s used as a binder than the actual opioid itself, right?
So you don’t own your body then. Too bad. As a medical person if I should ever obtain membership to one of those government ‘panels’(FDA?) then you’ll understand if a group of us medical ‘elites’ decides for the good of society that you and some select others no longer warrent further medical intervention for whatever ails you, that’ll you be accepting. Further, since we as knowledgeable elites(certified by the government) in our field determine that pain relief via narcotics, say hydrocodone, would be of no benefit to you we graciously prescribe you a modest size stick to bite on. I mean you seem so accepting of government micromanaging. Oh ya, I worked for government for over 25 years and am VERY familiar with the ins and outs of ‘regulations’.....uses and misuses. I used to work with many good little ‘soldiers’ such as yourself.
Can't never could.
Just because you've given up on Constitutional governance, don't expect anyone else to sink into your abject acceptance. I'll keep fighting it and speaking about it.
/johnny
You have that backwards.
But needless to say you, like the million of other mindless well-intentioned government drones, were never part of the problem yourself, and have the nerve now to insult and patronize others "good little soldiers" you know nothing about. Look in the mirror unconstitutional government regulator!
Thank you! (Blonde moment - having a lot of those these days)
Part of the problem? Maybe. Taking advantage of the problem, definitely. The voters, that being you, would have it no other way. YOU look in the mirror. All the ‘drones’, regulations, so on and so forth you, the voters, allowed. As for me, I worked in that part of government conservatives adore or did for the most part, Corrections. As for you, here’s a big ol’ snappy salute soldier.
Aren’t they already highly restricted?
It is different, because there is another body involved, that of the child.
Voters, citizens, want the government to protect them, that’s why we have “unconstitutional” traffic laws, and those signs on the right view mirrors (though not on current 2013 models for some reason.) It’s a legitimate desire, until it becomes illegitimate and leads to the present nanny state. But you ought to see this forum or hear the barroom discussions when the government fails for some reason to protect citizens against something like for example poisonous drugs. Then the arguments about FDA being unconstitutional are nowhere to be heard. Why didn’t the government do something about it? Situational ethics. And that’s how we get the government that grows and grows, the government we deserve.
You can fight, insult everyone who tells you that the FDA is here to stay, cite the Constitution, attack others on Internet for thought crimes against the Constitution, strike poses on Internet forums, but the FDA will still be here to stay, like the Depts. of Energy and Education that Saint Ronald Reagan abolished, wanna bet? Choose your fights carefully.
Me, too; however, I once took two (of the two prescribed) when I thought I was about to have the anticipated kidney stone attack. (When oxycodone is most effective).
I didn't realize I had been living a long time with various other painsas they evaporated one by one.
