Firm to female staffers: Learn hard words
New York Post ^ | October 25, 2013 | Natalie O'Neill

Smart women don’t show cleavage — or at least that’s what one high-powered Manhattan law firm is telling its female employees.

The legal firm Clifford Chance sent female associates a bizarre memo advising them to stop giggling, squirming and showing cleavage while speaking in public, irking female employees who called the tips sexist, the legal news website Abovethelaw.com reports.

Stop saying "like." And "I was like omigod" and "like literally."

“Smart women don’t show cleavage”. Check the background on the Divas from WWE.

I see nothing wrong with this. In a professional environment, act like a professional.

The company I work for has a “no cleavage” dress code. Hey Ladies buy some damn camisoles!

And stop using the speech patterns and inflections of the idiots on the “cool”, “in” TV shows. Nothing tips off how vacuous you are than parroting that sort of dreck.

So do I, but I also have difficulty taking them seriously.

I read the article. And I agree with the points.

But.

If that firm has a problem with chicks acting like college co-eds - then maybe the problem is the morons hiring the eye-candy in the first place.

I work in a bank. Very conservative. But in some departments you see Miss Cleavage being all pretty and cute. Does she get promoted? Does she advance in her career?

Nope.

Please, someone, forward that memo to Miley Cyrus. Her dad failed, and someone needs to tell her the stuff she will eventually figure out.

We all could take Fox News more seriously if they had a “no cleavege” policy for the on-air talent. Knee length skirts, too.

By the time she figures anything out she is going to look like a broke down, tatted up, Daytona stripper.

Have you noticed the word “like” preceding numbers when spoken? For instance I heard a 30-something yesterday say “There was like one spot open.” How can “one” be confused or approximated to “like one”? Granted, most of us use slang but there are some people who overwhelmingly state a number and use “like” prior to it.

Agreed, also, nearly everyone on Long Island, New York needs to learn this one:

•Don’t raise your pitch at the end of a statement if it’s not a question.

Doing that is part of the local dialect, and raising two kids in that area, I fought a mostly losing battle trying to get them to stop doing this.

I can't tell you how many times I said to them "ARE YOU ASKING ME OR TELLING ME"?

Exactly. It makes Fox look cheap and dumb. I am sure the women aren’t dumb but when u show too much skin, that is what people will think.

I suspect someone in top 'management' 'isn't getting any' - and has decided everything a woman does outside of a burka in intentionally arousing. It's like the person who's losing their hearing but has decided that everyone around him is mumbling...

I hope I can explain this properly. I was in a hotel lobby two years ago. There were three sections for seating. I was in the third. A couple of tourists, in the first section, were speaking loudly and the “like” word was used incessantly. A minor inconvenience to me, since I was in the distance. But in between was a well-dressed guy reading the Wall Street Journal. He then slammed his paper, got up, and asked me if he could sit in my section. I joked about the people speaking loud and he said “it isn’t that, it is the word ‘like.’ Do you hear how often they use it?” I told him it is a pet peeve. He then mentioned that he is responsible for hiring at a major company in New York and when he interviews college grads, he keeps a note pad handy and counts how many times they say “like.” He told me on average it exceeded 200 during the interview process. It didn’t surprise me. The language is being destroyed. The other word that is overused is “amazing.”
