Shouldn’t they have been learning hard words... BEFORE they were hired??
I hope I can explain this properly. I was in a hotel lobby two years ago. There were three sections for seating. I was in the third. A couple of tourists, in the first section, were speaking loudly and the “like” word was used incessantly. A minor inconvenience to me, since I was in the distance. But in between was a well-dressed guy reading the Wall Street Journal. He then slammed his paper, got up, and asked me if he could sit in my section. I joked about the people speaking loud and he said “it isn’t that, it is the word ‘like.’ Do you hear how often they use it?” I told him it is a pet peeve. He then mentioned that he is responsible for hiring at a major company in New York and when he interviews college grads, he keeps a note pad handy and counts how many times they say “like.” He told me on average it exceeded 200 during the interview process. It didn’t surprise me. The language is being destroyed. The other word that is overused is “amazing.”
