Federal health officials are warning pet owners to be cautious about feeding their dogs jerky treats as they continue to investigate a treat-related illnesses that has left nearly 600 dogs dead and sickened more than 3,000 others.
The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued an alert to consumers about the illnesses and deaths tied to jerky treats from China. Officials say the exact cause of the illnesses remains unknown.
"This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement. "Our beloved four-legged companions deserve our best effort, and we are giving it."

Among the products recalled were Nestle Purina PetCare Co’s Waggin Train and Canyon Creek Ranch treats, and Del Monte Corp’s Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers.
Nestle has 3-4 products that are suspect in these attacks and Del Monte 2-3. I would definitely stay away from both companies. It is a heartbreaking and maddening situation. A handful of kitties have even been sickened. :(
We had been giving our boy some chicken jerky treats, Waggin’ Tails if I remember correcly. We were flying fat dumb and happy untl about 1 a.m. one night last winter and momma found him having a siezure in the closet. Thankfully we have an all night/emergency vet in town. He came out of the “fit” and we took him to the ERV. He seemed to be okay but they faxed the test results to his regular doc and we saw him later the same morning. He asked us about any treats we gave him on a regular basis and said it it was from China, get rid of it. Only trust products from in the US or from Canada. We checked the bag when we got home and sure enough, MIChina. Tossed it. Some digging is required to find out who REALLY make his treats but it’s worth it. No further episodes.
The Chinese have even found a way to f up a dog treat.
If it is made in China, throw it away to be safe.
My dogs don’t like dog food. I cook for them but give them treats sometimes. The ones I give them say “distributed by Del Monte Products”. How do we know where they are actually made?
Better than killing them with Chinese dog food.
It’ amazing how much stuff in those high-end pet stores is made in China. People buy toys, leashes, collars and bedding made in China. Aren’t they afraid of what the dyes might contain?

not on the list but no more “treats” for the pup unless I make them
got to start watching the country of origin of everything we all buy for any family member to consume. And to think the USA just handed over a major meat packing business here in the US to China.

The problem with that practice is that even though you know where the ingredients come from, you can’t assume the recipe adheres to pet food nutritional quality standards. Pet food companies must test their foods for nutritional adequacy; there is no comparable assurance regarding home-made foods.

In my experience, folks who go to this trouble have done their research and know a thing or two about nutrition for canines. I don’t think we’re talking about feeding the dog table scraps exclusively.
Do you have the same concern with people who make their own baby food?
I buy Blue Buffalo food and treats, made in the USA.
I always check the labels for any pet toys, treat for “made in china” to avoid.
Dogs have lived rather well off plain old table scraps for many generations. It’s even Biblical actually.

I’m not a Bible scholar by any stretch, so I am asking out of ignorance. Is there a chapter and verse for those of us unfamiliar with the Biblical nature of feeding dogs table scraps?
I'm suspicious of this article and the timing. It smacks of a propaganda puff piece for the FDA. See, we're back on the job after finally crushing those evil Republicans who shut down the government and cause the death of all those dogs.

We’ve been watching what we’ve purchased for my 4-legged nephew (German Shepherd) for some time (IIRC since the last issue w dogfood from China). I also have insisted that we don’t purchase any candy made in China for my 2-legged nephew - I relayed that 2 his Mom a couple of years ago and when he’s with me and wants some candy, we always check the labels - he gets it now and just says OK. I was looking at possible items to put in his Halloween bag (present) over the past few days. I’ve noticed a few items that had - candy made in Canada, toy (or plastic) made in China.
Also, I’ve noticed that Walgreen’s has had a ‘new’ brand out in food products for about a year or so. Some look good, but I won’t purchase them because it doesn’t say where they’re made, only ‘Distributed by Walgreens’.

Oh heck...Milo’s? I thought that was “safe” stuff. A bag of Milo’s chicken meatballs goes for $11-12 at BJs Warehouse. I paid the price because it said “Made in the USA”...which I’d started looking for after the previous melamine scare.
