Is The Obama Administration The Cause Of Gun Ammunition Shortages?
Forbes ^ | Oct 20, 2013 | Frank Miniter

Posted on 10/20/2013 9:06:14 AM PDT by Innovative

As gun sales break records—partly because of fear of coming gun control from the Obama administration—supplies of ammo ran so low that gun stores and ranges have to ration ammunition. Meanwhile, rumors of mass purchases of ammunition made by government entities began to fly around the Internet. Making all this even worse is that fact that it hasn’t been a short-term supply problem. Now well over a year since the shortages of popular types of ammo began there are still empty shelves and rationing here and there around the United States.

As reference, the last time I bought a 500 box of 22LR from Wally World it was 15 bucks. That was 2003.

Ammo in this group is just as valuable as gold. To late now.

Who knows. But I find it troubling that .22 ammo
the kind normally used to teach young beginners
marksmanship is in such short supply.

No young shooters = no shooters eventually.

I still can’t find reasonably priced 22 rimfire ammo. What was $20 a brick less than 2 years ago is now $80+!

I was in a town outside Dallas last month and happened to run into .22s at a Walmart. There was a three box limit. My wife was with me so we got 6. The price would have been $31.80 a brick. (if we could have bought one). Went back later that day but the shelf was bare.

They're not rumors; they're explicitly posted as RFPs on government procurement web sites.

.22LR HAS LOWEST PROFIT MARGIN

That may be, but can the machines used to manufacture .22 rimfire be used to manufacture anything else?

Homeland Security isn’t the only federal agency buying ammo. The Social Security Department bought huge amounts of 357 Sig, and other ammo. You never know when the SS SWAT might have to cave in a doorway to retrieve an overpaid SS check.

I bought a PINK Ruger 22LR rifle back in January and started looking for 22 ammo. I got some, maybe 400 rounds, then it dried up. I started putting my name on lists at various gun shops on line and in August, due to my name being on a list, I got 375 rounds of CCI Mini Mag for $23.99 at USA Midway. All told, then, have 775 rounds.

I got rounds for my other defense weapons in 2012 before the shortage hit. I bought that ammo due to our country situation with Hussein running the show. I didn’t have the 22 rifle then.

Read the whole article. There isn’t a conspiracy, just a bunch of gun nuts hoarding ammunition. I went to Gander Mountain at 8:00 am when they opened one day this summer and there was a line of fifteen people to get into the store. When the store opened they all briskly walked over to the ammunition section to see if they had the favorite calibers. I talked to an employee and he said that day was the day they get their ammo delivery. Everyone was disappointed because the delivery was late.

In the article it says the DHS is buying less rounds than it had last year than it had in prior years.

Poor editing. The DHS bought less rounds of ammunition last year than it had in prior years.

It doesn’t take much to drive demand way up on .22 LR. Instead of buying and shooting a brick, people are inclined to buy several bricks, just in case. It wasn’t all that expensive compared to centerfire ammo. So suddenly you triple or quadruple demand in a short period. In addition, more firearms are being sold.

Found this out there:

Estimated Annual Production 2.5 Billon Rounds (Wikipedia). That is Approx 13,700 bricks of 500 per day. Sounds like allot? About 1,800 Walmarts sell Ammo, that is less than 8 bricks per day per Walmart.

I bought a box of .40 last week at Wally. They had three. I would have bought all of them but there were two guys behind me waiting to see if I was going to. Reminded me of a couple of stray dogs staring in the window of a meat market. I took pity on them. Maybe they’ll have my back one day, who knows?

Yeah, I've read a dozen articles just like it, including the NRA article they mention. I always come away with a feeling that someone's trying to pi** on my leg and tell me its raining.

"Gun nuts"? Wow...I guess we know where you stand.
