Hikers Destroy 200 Million Year Rock Formation, Celebrate (Video)

A group of hikers high-fived after one of them intentionally pushed over a large rock, which is part of the "goblins" or "hoodoos" formation, and is nearly 200 million years old.

The men filmed one of their buddies referred to as "Glenn" pushing the giant rock from behind (video below).

According to The Salt Lake Tribune YouTube page, "Three men, tagged as Dave Hall, Glenn Taylor and Dylan Taylor, push over large rock boulders in Goblin Valley, Utah in this video posted to Hall's Facebook page."

After the rock comes tumbling down, the men celebrate their accomplishment in Goblin Valley State Park in Green River, Utah.

"We have now modified Goblin Valley," says the man filming. "A new Goblin Valley exists with, uh, this boulder down here on the bottom. Muscles here pushed it off."

At one point the cameraman states, "That's crazy, it was just held up by this little piece of dirt."

Now, the three men may be facing felony charges and could end up high-fiving in jail.

"It is not only wrong, but there will be consequences," Utah State Parks spokesman Eugene Swalberg told The Salt Lake Tribune. "This is highly, highly inappropriate. This is not what you do at state parks. It’s disturbing and upsetting."

This is just what I said, that the figure of ~200 million years came from the age of the deposited strata. And I repeat that it seems specious to say that nature took this amount of time to form the rock that these yahoos toppled. Why not call it 10 billion years in the making, as we may say of anything we come upon at any time?

In sedimentary rock, the age of the deposition is what provides the time frame of the rock formation.

“Rock formation” is an ambiguous term in this context. You pick up a rock ... when was it formed? The geologists answer is the date of the agglomeration of the material of the rock, yet in common terms, a “rock formation” refers to the apparent configuration of the constituent rocks, however ancient their “formation” may have been.

So, we’re involved in a purely rhetorical exercise. If that rock was 200 million years old, it was still 200 million years old after it was tipped over.

I'm with you, I couldn't give a flip a pile of rocks - inanimate objects that were in a pile, now on the ground.

Oh... but they look so pretty. Bunch of FReepers wallowing in sentimental stupidity, not unlike the envirals often do.

Immature idiots, but I can’t get worked up over it unless that was the last formation of its kind on earth. Can I safelyl assume there are many many thousands more left, many more robust than able to be knocked over by an out-of-shape couch potato.

Anything that could be knocked over by a lard ass can’t have been long remaining in any event.

I’ll take this over 50 million aborted kids any day.

I don’t condone destroying neat natural features, especially very old ones, but I just can’t get worked up over this.

Non issue. Stupid people, but a non-issue.

Now the Muzzies destroying unique historical statures, carvings and reliefs — now THAT I can get worked up over. Or having historic buildings and bridges bombed into powder during meaningless wars, that gets me far more worked up than a one-of-a-million rock formation that is ready to collapse under its own weight any millennium now.

In this case there is nothing ambiguous about the Entrada sandstone rock formation. You are correct in terms of rhetoric, but if I demolish a car with one mile on it, would you still call it a new car?

The only thing I missed in the video was those guys celebrating with a round of some variety of lite beer, then leaving the empties behind as they waddled back to their vehicles.

To be fair, I don’t think it was millions of years needed to do this, I suspect the flood thousands of years back had something to do with it.

These guys aren’t too smart though. Sometimes it’s just nice to leave things alone so other people can enjoy them.

There seems to be an extraordinary degree of multi-facetted stupidity in these younger generations. Not that prev. kids would not do stupid stuff, we just didn’t do stupid things purposely to film it for posterity like some Beamus and Butthead show.

These boys are going to be appearing in front of a rural county judge.

Their life is going to suck for the next several years.

idiots for doing something dangerous.

would we freak out if mother gaia allowed the formation to crumble and fall? would we say what a bitch she was to let it fall? and then let’s throw the book at her?

i’m not saying they aren’t doofuses. i think it’s being overblown. especially if the report is true and it was an otherwise unasuming formation.
