Governor Rick Perry was once alleged to have stated that Texas could secede in the future. But he now states he opposes succession:

If the different states were to become different nations, the federal government would cease to exist. That means that the federal debt would be reduced to Zero. But the price that Americans would pay, would be the loss of super power status. Would Americans be better off or worse off, if the states were to become different countries?
If Texas became sovereign and followed a Constitution(along the lines of the original one) and became a real republic again the economy of Texas would boom. It would be almost out of control in the upward direction.
I guess that one wants to win. Part of winning is picking up support. One reason why the pretended Confederacy couldn’t pick up support from other nations was because its existance was based on slavery, and the rapes permitted by that institution, the kidnapping and torture that it required. That institution made the pretended confederacy the bad guys, so bad that Prince Albert on his deathbed got the leaders of the two parties to promise that they would not support the pretended confederacy.
Consider the 9-11 atrocity. Its horrific nature made even our usual rivals support us. consider the Beslin atrocity, or the murders of Muslims at Sarajevo that spurred NATO to protect Muslims from Serbia and Christians in Bosnia.
Consider the murder camps of the Nazi Germans. The discovery of those camps, and the publicity of their atrocities discredited the Nazis and the SS that operated them. There is no SS mythos in Germany as there is among some deluded people in the US and UK.
Consider Iraq. The terrorism of Al Queda in Iraq made it possible for US forces to have the Iraqi people as allies and so the Surge, which focused on protecting the people from the terrorists, was successful.
If you want to win, you must avoid war crimes. You must have courage to do this. Murdering women and children does not take courage.
The Republic of Texas failed as a separate country previously. Its leaders knew it had serious problems and tried to be annexed by the US almost immediately. It had no manufacturing, and no markets for its agricultural products. Diplomatically they were constantly in a state of war with Mexico, and had the added drag of constant readiness to suppress a slave revolt.
Diplomatically they tried to support other insurrections against Mexico, as they sought to be annexed by the US. They even built a fleet for one province of Mexico to aid its insurrection, as commemorated on the cylinder of the Colt Navy revolver.
Today Texas benefits from its trade union with the US, producing low cost and high technology goods to go along with its agricultural and mineral goods. It draws intellectual property from all over the US. What would happen if US companies and persons had to jump through ITAR hoops before shipping products or information to Texas? What would happen with Tariffs applied to Texas goods before import to the US? Texas has no income tax now, but it benefits from and contributes to the military establishment of the US. What if the military establishment of the US becomes a threat, with bands of raiders along the boundary to the north, as well as the drug cartels along the boundary to the south?
Texas might make a go of it this time, but it wouldn’t be easy. Even France, Germany, Turkey and Greece are trying to submerge their differences to obtain a trade union to make their goods competitive, and taking grave risks to do so. It doesn’t make sense for Texas to take grave risks to make their goods less competitive, or their cost of living more expensive.
You bring specific insights to exactly what I was concerned with back a few years ago...Spooky...
As hard as it might be, there may be a segment of the people in this state that may consider that risk, acceptable...
The quesiton some may need to ask themselves is, “Am I willing to support such a movement, in light of all that stands against it?”
Both externally...And internally...Remember, there are people that would not want to cut the cord, who would fight against us, violently to keep the status quo...
What do you do with them???
Just some random thoughts I figured might be useful to some doing a little soul searching...
All of them. Twice, for good measure. No need to thank me.
Politics is discussion over the use of force. Voting is an act of force and coercion.
