After Islamic gunmen attacked the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, the collective reaction from the US media was to speculate whether such terror could happen here, as if a jihadist assault on a mall inside America had never before been tried.
CNN was typical: “Can it happen here? Yes, say security experts, but it hasn’t.”
News flash: it did.
On the evening of Feb. 12, 2007, a young Muslim man walked into the Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City with a pistol-grip, 12-gauge shotgun and a 38-caliber revolver and opened fire on shoppers, killing five and wounding four others, including a pregnant woman.
Police say he “sought to kill as many people as possible.” He had a backpack full of ammunition, enough firepower to massacre dozens of innocent people. But fortunately, an off-duty cop returned fire and eventually, with the help of other police, put an end to the terrorist’s life and grand plans.

I remember that story, as the article says, the guy was a Bosnian. Well, that attack may have killed more than Boston but I believe Boston had over a 100 maimed, injured, it was bad in that way as well.
The media NEVER told us this was a terrorist attack committed by a member of a fanatical violent cult.
They never connected it to the murders in Kenya.

The Kenyan has been attacking this country ever since he usurped the presidency.
While a tragedy, quite a far cry from multiple attackers heavily armed with military weaponry.
I haven't seen anybody say what would prevent a similar attack to the one in Nigeria on a mall here. Or for that matter an armed assault on most public places.
Security, where it exists, is set up to keep someone from sneaking weapons in, not to stop heavily armed guys from shooting their way in.

Actually, I don’t mind the tone of the article but 3 were killed at the Boston Marathon itself. Correct? 2 women and the little boy. Then, in the chase, the Tsarnaevs killed a police officer.
So per my reading this, it’s not “twice as many people”. Maybe I’m missing something.
Could it happen in the United States? Yes. I am surprised that it hasn’t happen more that what is reported in this article. I too, never knew the details of the shooters background or religion. The only thing I can remember from the SLC shooting was the off-duty policeman saying he wishes he carried more then just his one loaded magazine. I learned from his mistake.
Do I suspect this will happen on the scale of Kenya, or even the India hotel attack? It is hard to say. A plot conceived overseas and brought into this country would be difficult I think. A home grown plot? Now that has a much better chance of happening. With all the immigrants from countries where muslims tend to be the majority, the ideas of fundamental muslims, and the simple fact that failure to assimilate into this country’s way of life and what it offers, tends to make home grown incidents more likely.
Before SLC, I would not have thought it likely an attack would take place in a place like Utah; gun owners, concealed carry, etc. I would have suspected an attack in those states where the likely hood of concealed carry would be low and shoppers helpless would be a more likely scenario. I suspect that would the likely targets of a long term, foreign influenced plot. Hit the easy target for more causalities. Home grown is more likely to happen anywhere it would seem. After all, they tend to live almost anywhere now days.

Utah is the wild west in their minds. We still ride around in stagecoaches and have shoot outs on main street. (well, that’s true i guess in SW Tucson and south central LA. but geez, the same for Long Island.)
It’s also where all those evil, hateful, white people who wouldn’t comply with the mass thought of the day were sent.
So if Uncle Barry were to decide to (I won’t say it. He’s not very bright so best not to give him ideas.)... there won’t even be a passing news story on CNN.
You’ve got to understand. It’s necessary to keep the sheep in the chute calm, right up to the point you; WHAM.
