Its made for Hollywood: the story of an average American family man, captain of a cargo ship in dangerous waters, his vessel overtaken by armed Somali pirates demanding ransom, saving his crew by allowing himself to be removed from the boat and taken hostage.
All of this is the basis for Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks as the titular, real-life hero. The only problem, say some members of the real Capt. Phillips crew, is none of it is true.
Capt. Richard Phillips, they say, is no hero, and the film is one big lie.
Phillips wasnt the big leader like he is in the movie, says one crew member, who, for legal reasons, spoke with The Post anonymously. He worked very closely with Phillips on the Maersk Alabama and was alarmed by his behavior from the beginning. Phillips, he says, had a bad reputation for at least 12 years prior, known as a sullen and self-righteous captain.

WILSON!!!!
I know. But the average low-info person is not necessarily seeing with a critical eye. An example: I was talking to a friend who is a les bien about Victor/Victoria. She actually said she was surprised that Robert Preston was gay, believing that he was what the role he played was. People do not think critically. Robert Preston was an actor playing a gay man. That does not mean he was gay. She made that leap without any additional info.
People believe what they see in the movies.
Art can’t worry about those people. It would be pandering. There were people who were shocked that Titanic was actually a real ship. Morons.
That movie seems to be forgotten, but I am with you. It is in my top 10 all time favorite movies. Not great "cinema" by any means, but a fun movie.
I've always wanted to stumble onto Tom Hanks and say, "Hey, aren't you that guy from the movie Bachelor Party?" I would love to see his reaction.
People believe what they see in the movies.
Hollyweird used to make pro-American films. Now it dedicates its money, talent and energy to making anti-American movies.
I think Hanks is a liberal crazy, but seems to be a fairly nice guy - most recently doing jury duty (which he could have probably ducked) and the comments about his behavior there. He did a very good job as the captain. The movie was well done and suspenseful. Not surprising that it was fictionalized - don’t know what movies aren’t.
People who are misled and uninformed can be nice people - frustrating certainly. It’s a rare bird that can hang around a group of Hollywood loons for many years and not take on some of their beliefs.
Most of my sea life I worked on oilfield service vessels, which were chartered to oil companies or oilfield service contractors. The policies of these companies were to conduct fire, man overboard, and abandon ship drills monthly.
SOLAS requires that boat drills be conducted any time that 25% or more of the crew has been replaced. On these types of ships changes of crew and charterer’s personnel on board were quite frequent.
I never served in any Navy. Do they, to your knowledge, require drills at any set frequency?
I don’t know about any required frequency but, given that it was the Navy, there certainly would have been one. :=) Captains could exceed any minimum requirement at their own discretion and I’m sure that many of them did. As an enlisted man, I was just a participant.
