Anti-government anger fuels long-shot Maryland breakaway bid

WESTMINSTER, Maryland (Reuters) - Scott Strzelczyk is fed up with what he calls political slavery in Maryland and sees one way out - creating a breakaway state, a feat that has not been accomplished since the American Civil War.
Riding a wave of anti-government sentiment across the United States, the small-town information technology consultant has launched a long-shot bid to get Maryland's five conservative western counties to secede from the state, one of the most liberal and Democratic in the country.
"We think we have irreconcilable differences, and we just want an amicable divorce," Strzelczyk, 49, told Reuters after pitching secession to the We the People Tea Party group in Carroll County, a county he hopes will be part of the split.

With luck the Eastern Shore will follow, they could actually feed themselves.
I live in St. Mary’s County and I wish we could secede with them,. I am pretty sure the Eastern Shore would like to also.
Maryland is ruled by the Democrats in Central meryland around Prince Georges, Montgomery, Howard and Baltimore County and city. Central Maryland the land of entitlements.
I went to the eastern shore for three days in May to eat crab cakes
They had T Shirts “I’m not from Maryland, Im from the Eastern shore”
I bought a Gadsen Flag bumper sticker “Don’t Tread On Me” with an angry crab in the place of the rattlesnake.
Fingers crossed. They can call themselves Nuevo New York.
We are seeing a lot of this sort of thing.
“Scott Strzelczyk is fed up with what he calls political slavery in Maryland and sees one way out - creating a breakaway state, a feat that has not been accomplished since the American Civil War.”
And what a feat and accomplishment it was!
I went to college in Frostburg. People in western Maryland feel disconnected from the rest of Maryland. Western Maryland is a very different place socially, economically, politically. People there feel they have more in common with neighboring West Virginia than the rest of Maryland.
There has been talk of this happening in a few other states too.
.... Maryland ping.
They should try to join an existing state such as WV. I believe it would be easier than forming a new state.
The point of this, not only here, but in other states, is to divorce the big-city liberal cancer from controlling the other smaller conservative bastions. Cut off the lifeblood from the cancer, and you starve the cancer. I hope they succeed. Many other states will follow.
“And what a feat and accomplishment it was!”
I think he was referring to West Virginia breaking away from Virginia.
“...creating a breakaway state, a feat that has not been accomplished since the American Civil War.”
He might speak more truth than he realizes with that one.
I think he’s referring to W. Virginia. Part of VA seceded and it’s still that way.
Yes, it might be easier to join a neighboring state rather than form a new state. A state of western Maryland would be very small in area and population.
Politically these efforts are very difficult. Per the Constitution, forming a new state requires consent of each state, plus consent of Congress in Washington, DC. Realistically, we’re talking about forming new conservative states. Politically, liberal Democrats in Congress would only consent if Democrat bastions such as Washington, DC, New York City, Chicago, etc can become their own states, knowing that these liberal cities will elect Democrats to balance out conservatives sure to be elected from new conservative states.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks.
This really needs to be done. The cities are sinkholes that the rest of the state is stuck with. They have a gimme philosophy and, because they have the numbers, they end up making the rules. California needs to be 4 states, New York at least 2 maybe 3, Colorado needs to split off. Face it, in state after state the gimme group is destroying the country.
Obama has really united this country with hope and change hasn’t he?.../s
Seriously have you ever seen so much chaos, division, and fear caused by one man in your lifetime. You have to ask yourself, is this really a man or something else?
