On the Chuck Brooks Law-Call hour, 12:00-1:00 pm, Saturday October 10, on the Baltimore station WCBM, two separate callers stated that the "Food Stamp System" was not working at several Baltimore grocery stores. The second caller mentioned that folks in the store were blaming Republicans.
I cannot personally confirm these reports. Are other Freepers noticing this in their locations?

A State of Florida budget analysis performed for the Florida Senate stated that federal funding for Floridas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expired with the rest of the farm bill on September 30, 2013. To bridge this funding gap, the federal Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) will use its authority under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to continue operations and benefit payments to Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards (also known as Food Stamps) only through October 31, 2013.
Federal funding for cash payments to welfare recipients, known as Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), also expired September 30, 2013. The Florida Senate budget analysis stated that this program now lacks federal authorization and funding.

Obama is upping the ante in his negotiations with the Republicans. If things get too far out of hand, he can use the martial law option, and this is leverage he will use against the Republicans this weekend.

Down in Alabama too.
I think the intensity level just got ratcheted up a few notches.

The Wash DC NPR classic music station has been running those emergency broadcast tests weekly for the last month and a half. Non-issue. As a former broadcaster, I know you HAVE to run those things once a week. EVERY station does. That's FCC law. You just may not have noticed it before a month-and-a-half ago.

We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of
money.
How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money?
Maybe we’re hearing it now.

We are being told that a technical services vendor (Xerox) had a power outage which did affect being able to pay with a benefits card in several states. As of early Saturday afternoon, the debit system was back up and the SNAP program was being rebooted, with expectations that all services would be back up shortly.
