During the first six months of 2013, 100 percent of the people bitten by dogs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Canine Services were black or Latino.
That's 100 percent. As in every single one.
The data comes from a report by the Police Assessment Resource Center, a nonprofit organization that aims to "strengthen police oversight so as to advance effective, respectful and publicly accountable policing."
Clearly, these people have job security -- they have their work cut out for them in Los Angeles.
According to PARC's records, the number of Latinos bitten by LASD dogs increased 30 percent from 30 bites in 2004 to 39 in 2012. The number of blacks bitten increased 33 percent for the same time period, from 9 to 12. And when it came to the beginning of 2013, white people didn't have to worry about police-initiated animal attacks at all.
It's no secret that L.A.'s law-enforcement officers have historically struggled with racial profiling (that's putting it as mildly as calling Rodney King's infamous brutal beating an "incident"). And just this year, the New York City Police Department was forced to revamp its stop-and-frisk policy thanks in part to data on the shockingly disproportionate number of times that black and Latino men were apprehended by officers.
But seriously -- are man's best friends now profiling perpetrators, too?
Not likely (although there is actually a case to be made that doggie racism is a real thing). Given the context, our best guess is that this is simply more bad news about humans dealing with the whole "a person's race isn't a good reason to decide they're dangerous" thing, which seems to be becoming more difficult to grasp all the time.
Just like judgment calls about who's "suspicious," and determinations about when to pull out handcuffs,

They just need more white criminals, that is all.
Could Kristy McNichol have trained every dog in Los Angeles?
Makes eminent good sense since blacks and Latinos commit most of the crime. I guess the comparatively few white perps didn’t resist arrest and therefore avoided a confrontation with a dog (or canine as the cops call them).
Racist dogs.
Actually, I had a racist dog at one time. He was a German Shepherd, whom we rescued from the pound. When we got him, he was obviously traumatized. We were told that he had been abused, kept chained to the back porch by his owner, a black man who lived in White Plains. When the owner failed to pay the rent, he was eventually kicked out of the house and left the dog behind, chained to the porch.
Anyway, long story short, whenever Brownie saw a black man walking by, he would start to growl and bark, recalling his unhappy puppyhood. It was pretty embarrassing—I’d have to drag him back the other way, until the man he was growling at had gone by, out of sight.
Don’t tell me. Their dogs are all members of the TEA Party.
Pretty simple explanation; racist dogs! /sarc
Heard that story more than once.
Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dogs Bite Only Blacks and Latinos?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
So, I praise the dogs for doing their job and my post gets removed? What the heck?
Black people like Bernie Madoff or Ted Bundy?
A more correct conclusion would be that 100% of the calls requiring a dog involved blacks and Latinos.
Tracking phone!
Calls requiring a dog that resulted in a bite.
Years ago we lived in a small Texas town, it was very segregated. The black part of town was called “the quarter” by blacks and whites alike. A white person on foot in the quarter would get barked at and was very likely to get bitten. This was well understood by all. The dogs didn’t do that to the black people. The dogs in the white neighborhoods might bark at blacks or whites, or not bark at all depending on their mood. We always laughed about black peoples dogs being racist.
So a black man from White Plains had a dog named Brownie who was racist?
Maybe it’s racist trainers. Maybe it’s racist dogs. Maybe most of the criminals in that part of town are black Or maybe it’s just a matter of taste? Do some of us taste different than others ? ( at any event if the pooch really is doing this he needs to be reassigned to a Desk job to finish out his pension ).
