The Department of Defense unit charged with recovering servicemembers remains abroad has been holding phony arrival ceremonies for seven years, with an honor guard carrying flag-draped coffins off of a cargo plane as though they held the remains returning that day from old battlefields.
The Pentagon acknowledged Wednesday that no honored dead were in fact arriving, and that the planes used in the ceremonies often couldnt even fly, and were towed into position. The story was first reported on nbcnews.com.

This is really so typical of the average government employee(s) trying to justify their existence. Too many have jobs that do nothing and they just want to do nothing until they can retire. They put up a false front and people leave them alone..all the way up the chain of command.

One would think that the 17% shutdown would put an end to this disgrace.

I guess I need someone to draw a picture for me.
I just can't figure out why this would be done.

One would think that the 17% shutdown would put an end to this disgrace. One would hope so and one would also hope the officers involved are busted to private and at minimum kicked out with dishonorable discharges.

The only positive is that it was uncovered by NBC.

As I read the article it appears to me that remains arrive and they don’t know if they’re American. They take them to a lab and do tests. Once identified as American they then hold this ceremony. It’s a muddled attempt to honor a fallen American ... Better way to do this? I’m sure there is. But it seems to be an effort to honor our fallen soldiers regardless.

Apparently when they bring the remains in they may not know who it is or even if it is actually the remains of an American.
If after the remains are identified they have a ceremony that a fallen American has been brought home, I don’t really have a problem.
