A single mother who has been working at McDonald's for 10 years was detained by police last week after she interrupted the company president's speech in Chicago to confront him about low worker pay.
Crain's Chicago Business reports that 26-year-old Nancy Salgado was part of a group protesting the event, asking company officials to raise worker wages to $15 an hour and allow employees to form a union without fear of retaliation.

$8.25/hr x 2000 hrs/year is $16,500.
With two kids she gets $5236 in Earned Income Tax Credit and $2025 in Additional Child Tax Credit.
If she has nothing withheld she will get a “refund” of $7261 (2012 figures).
She is also eligible for WIC, Food Stamps, Section 8 Housing, and who knows what else.
If she doesn't like the pay, she should move on.
It’s been years since I got anything at McDonalds except for the coffee, and that was only one time. I heard such great things about it, but to me it was as weak as dishwater.
“Happify”......I like that word. Going to use it.
<I find it strange shes worked for Mickey Dees for 10 years and is still making $8.25/hr.
Aside from the fact these jobs are meant to be entry level or jobs for retirees or at home moms/students, you’d think that after 10 years she’d be a manager or something, with an increase in pay. I know that if my life choice involved McDonald’s, after 10 years, I’d be some kind of regional manager or something, not still working on the line.
Of course, someone has to do that work. Maybe she’s reached the limits of her ability. Fine. It doesn’t mean she should get $15 an hour for flipping burgers and using pictures to run the cash register.
If I worked at McDonalds for more than two years and was not part of management then I would know I needed to upgrade my abilities and knowledge, work harder, pay more attention to being to work every day on time, or find a better job.
I am also reading some of the comments on MSN. So far, none are sympathetic.
My take:
1) People (like me) are fed up with these single moms who won't take any responsibility for themselves yet want to be taken care of.
2) The readership of Yahoo or MSN might be older, & therefore wiser. They just won't feed into the liberal BS anymore.
3) You're right -- they might all be Freepers! (LOL too)
McD coffee used to be weak worthless swill. The. They improved it to a drinkable level but that’s about it. If you want better coffee go get some Peets. Star*ucks has no taste save your money.
But at each stage, as I climbed out of my last ditch, walked out of my last greasy spoon diner, or dropped my last tire iron, there was always smiles all around, handshakes and slaps on the back. "Hey! Hey! Kid's goin' ta' college!" ..."Good luck, boy! Don't come back now, ya' hear?" "Congrats on the new job!" "Kid's movin' up!" Those jobs taught me respect for the poor Joes; the wrench benders, pearl divers, and hash slingers that will never be anything else in life. Those jobs taught me basic skills, and with them, the knowledge that no matter how far down I might slide in life, I could always earn a living. Also, I became a damn fine cook too.
Being a single mom is tough - been there and done that. But it’s a choice you make and you have to live with the consequences. People today have one HUGE option my generation didn’t have - you can now get a degree on-line.
There is absolutely no excuse for getting more education if that is what you need to get ahead. Libraries are full of computers they can use. If there are no jobs where people live, they need to get their dupas on the road and go where they are.
Too much whining and mollycoddling going on.
If a person has a nicer cell phone than me, I quit listening.
And they always do.
She may be trying to make it stable. Having daddy around is not just her choice.
I know one young lady who would have made it to the wedding with a 'bump' in the dress, but the groom to be was caught in bed with an old girlfriend a week before the wedding. She toughed it out, dumped the guy (who is currently a drug addict and waste of oxygen), and had the kid. A bright, beautiful child.
She is still looking to make that a family of three, but her options would have been equally or more bleak with the guy as without him.
Yep, she is having a hard go of it, but she's working--and not expecting money for nothing.
Better money in food services as a server in a sit-down restaurant--at least they get tips.
We don’t have a Peets anywhere near here....I’d try their coffee if we did. Starbucks is awful, I agree.
We buy Dunkin Donuts, and my husband makes it strong enough to walk across the counter. :)
Www.peets.com. I hate paying five dineros for a nickle’s worth of coffee but that probably just shows I’m getting olde. However, if I’m gonna pay today’s high prices I want to at least be able to taste the coffee. Peets always tastes good so we go there. They also can ship you coffee you then can make at home.
That looks delicious. Thank you-—I might have to try some.
I wish you well. I also wish I’d had stock in it. Ha. The shares went way up and eventually it got bought out. But you could see it coming by the long lines of people eager to plunk down big bucks there. And I was too stupid to buy the stock. Oh well. You can’t take money with ya and I’m getting close to that tine anyway. Ha. Enjoy your java.
You, too. God bless!
Eating up the profits?
