A single mother who has been working at McDonald's for 10 years was detained by police last week after she interrupted the company president's speech in Chicago to confront him about low worker pay.
Crain's Chicago Business reports that 26-year-old Nancy Salgado was part of a group protesting the event, asking company officials to raise worker wages to $15 an hour and allow employees to form a union without fear of retaliation.

If the wage would go there, the savings would be worth about a third of what they are now and things would cost more through the roof.
“It was designed around the entry level worker, folks transitioning into the work force. Get some skills, move on.”
I agree, half-wise. It was designed to suck so much, serving other people, that you will have to revise your outlook in life and ask yourself “man, I don’t wan to do this sh*tty job, I’ll take my education seriously”..
I did work for McD’s and subway in high school. Promised myself if I end up here at age 30, I will hang myself.
Protesters confront...and "ASK"? The author of this story is a tool.
Quite. Like “asking” the “rich” to “contribute” a “little bit more.”
“She could buy one share of stock in the corporation and speak her mind about management at the stockholders meeting, but that would require some brains.”
Nope. Those meetings do not allow every stock holder the floor. No way they could.
If this woman wants to move up the success ladder, she should work harder than anyone else around her, and she eventually will be rewarded.
“A single mother who has been working at McDonald’s for 10 years...”
Correction: had been working
There is a reason that she is only making $8.25 at McDonald’s after ten years and it has nothing to do with McDonald’s.
this:
“I find it strange shes worked for Mickey Dees for 10 years and is still making $8.25/hr.”
strange? I call it BS
she is lying
OR she keeps quiting and returning
There were options 10 years ago. She might have studied hard and gotten an education or learned a trade which would have a commercial value that increase with experience.
Working McD at 16 for a couple of years is fine so far as it goes, that’s a good start for learning a work ethic, and it’s respectable. But it’s not a job to stay in for 10 years. It is not worth $15/hour in today’s marketplace, especially solely because someone chose to stay in place for 10 years instead of learning more skills and moving up.
I had a janitorial job early in my working life as well.
If you were to sit her down and nicely explain all that to her, she would become strident, and accuse you of being a racist who wants her and her kids to starve.
She isn’t interested in logic or the reality of economics; she just wants what she thinks she should get, no matter what.
10 years at McDonalds and only $8.25. You’d think she’d at least be a shift manager or crew leader. If I were the person she was complaining to the first question I’d ask her is ,What are you doing now that you weren’t doing 10 years ago to justify this raise? HINT: Popping out a couple of kids by different fathers doesn’t count.
If she has worked there for 10 years and is still in the lower rungs, she’s NOT working hard at all. If she put the effort into work that she’s put into protesting the wages, she would already be earning $15 an hour, if not more. Another lazy liberal.
Could be. Or she does just enough to get by. Messing up orders, not being friendly, etc. but not quite enough to get fired. Have worked with this type before. They drive me utterly insane with their lazy attitude, but they don’t do anything really dumb to get themselves canned.
She would sue also and Jesse Jackson would be out in no time.
Single mother of two. 26 years old. Same Mcjob for 10 years.
And now she’s fired.
Best thing thats ever happened to her. Now she can get EBT, WIC, Section 8, and even a free Obama phone.
Let her squeeze out a few more chilrens and she’ll be taking home more dough than ever before.
Yep, there is a company called “Momentum Machines” already selling a machine fully capable of making high quality burgers. Also, at least one Jack in the Box has already implemented a machine to take the orders and payments.
She didn’t pull that $15.00 number out of the air. She’s been talking to that SIEU bunch.
well you are right about there being lazy do nothing people
but I am pretty sure McDonalds has a wage scale progression
If she is still employed she would get raises most likely every year
there is ZERO way someone could be continuously employed by McDonalds and only make their opening wage
well, I am glad she is working instead of sitting at home watching the boob toob all day.
incidentally, McD’s prices are mostly not bargains for what you get there. just my opinion (and I do realize their “dollar menu” sometimes has a couple of things that are worth that price ...but a lot of their regular menu items are really pretty fully priced, imho. ...)
I have to say that I don’t think she will get too great of a raise by complaining at the company meetings. That is an Alinsky type tactic that may have worked when he wrote, the society was more sympathetic in some ways, but in today’s world the owners and managers in attendance at corporate meetings are, I think, less likely to want to “happify” her. Indeed, they just might fire her for interrupting their business agenda with her complaining.
