MOSCOW, October 9 (RAPSI) - Greenpeace activists on trial for maritime piracy in Russia soon may face new charges after drugs were found at the Arctic Sunrise ship, Investigative Committee's official spokesperson Vladimir Markin told journalists on Wednesday.
Markin added that the investigators have secured an official court order to seize the ship. Earlier, 30 members of the crew were charged with maritime piracy. "With this new evidence that came to light during the investigation, the charges against the accused will be augmented accordingly. It is very clear to the investigation that a number of participants will be chraged with other serious crimes," Markin said.
The Arctic Sunrise ship was seized by Russian border guards on September 19 in international waters, within Russia's exclusive economic zone, a day after two Greenpeace activists scaled the Prirazlomnaya drilling rig in the Pechora Sea, the southeastern part of the Barents Sea. Greenpeace claimed that the ship was held under armed guard.
The platform, owned by Gazprom Neft Shelf, a subsidiary of Russian energy giant Gazprom, is the first ice-resistant stationary oil platform in the world set to produce offshore Arctic oil.
Greenpeace and other environmental groups oppose drilling for oil in the Arctic because they say that it is currently impossible to sufficiently clean up potential oil spills in the region, and that such drilling cannot be economically viable without state subsidies.

This will drive the self righteous leftie environazis right up the wall.
From the jail cells there was singing “yo ho ho and a baggie of blow”
Good point. The new Russian courts don’t care about little stuff like proof.
Greenpeace has been ignoring international laws, endangering life and running amok while the pussyfied western democracies do nothing.
Right about now they are starting to realize that they should not have messed with the Rissian Bear.
Putin is not Obama.
I really don’t care in this case.
Bwahahahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I hope the eco-terrorists enjoy their stay in the Russian gulag.
The crew was probably told they had some umbrella shield protecting them of media and friendly liberal politicians around the world who would come and save them in situations like this.
Sad thing is Greenpeace will treat these people like martyrs now and use them as recruiting propaganda for money and volunteers, and probably come out ahead in the long run.
They must have known Russia doesn’t play like that when it comes to State owned assets, and like the old saying goes - “When in Rome...”
Of course not; they can't find the spilled oil to clean up!
They found dope on a ship full of hippys? I don’t believe it. MUST have been planted.
If you buy the ticket, you gotta take the ride.
Enjoy Siberia, a**h****.
Sucks to be them...
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Why? Now they’ll get to make a long-term, close-up study of the effects of global warming in an extreme environment, where they will be supplied food and sleeping quarters. Very long-term.
And some say God is not just, and has no sense of humor.
With these activist Greenpeace loonies, I am not surprised drugs have been found on board the ship.
It’s possible the Green peace people are a bunch of junkies, seeing as how they’re liberals. But, it’s also true that it is very common for the Russians to plant drugs on people or other illegal items. This is generally how they deal with their dissidents on a common basis. A fellow says something bad about Putin. Not long after, he is arrested because they found illegal guns on him, or drugs.
Since this is Green Peace they probably had a couple of pallets with several bales of pot on each.
Like this wasn’t predictable.
Im trying to give a shi’ite..I really am
Oh yeah, sure.
What do you think Greenpeace hippies do all day on a boat when they haven’t found anyone to protest?
Hey Greenies...When you play stupid games you win stupid prizes!
“Did they actually find it or did they find it ?”
Yes.
Interesting, I noticed that the news article included the Greenpeace objective and reason (I call it propaganda) for the operation, with no attention to the Russian position of legally recovering minerals for Russia's economic benefit.
I would classify as erring in favor of Greenpeace as far as fairness in presentation.
This goes to the seriousness of Russia to build credibility and confidence in their legal system.
