WASHINGTON — One is a former Texas talk-radio host who had never held public office until he won a seat in Congress in the 2010 tea party wave.

Another is an MIT-educated inventor who has all but shelved his scientific pursuits to reinvent government.

Others are back-bench, right-wing lawmakers who have served in Congress for years but suddenly find their once far-afield views have more currency within their party.

These are the House Republicans who have convinced Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) to use the federal shutdown and a possible debt default as leverage to reduce the reach of government.

They are not just tea party members but a combination of newcomers and veterans who, by sheer force of their personalities, and emboldened by safe conservative districts, have chosen to defy Washington's traditional norms of conversation and compromise.

“have chosen to defy Washington’s traditional norms of conversation and compromise.”

LOL, and how many laws has Klownie the Kenyan signed without “conversing” Congress?

Maybe now Americans will that the government is not needed as gov shut down and nothing has happened.Obama is pure evil and a communist.

I’m glad Republicans shut down government. government is useless and only oppresses as in the IRS

call them and tell Republicans to hold the line and not cave in to media pressure

And both immeasurably more qualified than obamarangadingdong at any time in his political career including his residency. Funny how experience is only an issue when it suits the liberal diatribe.

The Debt Ceiling — it’s the law of the land. Let’s not even discuss changing it. How’s that?

An article written from the standpoint that everyone wants the norms of DC, that everyone thinks like the inside the Beltway types. Jeesh.

About half of the 232 House Republicans were elected in the last two elections, many with little or no legislative experience.

And why is “experience” an issue? President Obama was elected with only two years of legislative experience. I don’t remember the self-anointed complaining about his lack of political experience. And let us not forget that the entrenched “experts” are the ones that got us into this mess in the first place.

Always remember, the Arc was built by amateurs, and the Titanic was built by experts.

My, my, the proggies certainly have come a long way from "challenge authority", "fight the power", and "dissent is the highest form of patriotism", haven't they? Now all of a sudden it's all about conformity, obedience, and respect for The Man.

What is funny is how many people ever were fooled into thinking it was sincere.

The usual conversation + compromise = debt of $17,000,000,000,000.00 and yearly deficits approaching $1,000,000,000,000.00 every single year. It is time for a new approach...tax, print, borrow and spend doesn't work anymore.

When have the democrats compromised? Never. democrats have always been for more government power , more government laws , more government. and have never compromised by reducing government size.
