Lake Mead property owners forced out until shutdown ends
KNTV ^ | 10/5/13 | Jacqui Heinrich

The government shutdown is being felt close to home for some locals. They say they're being forced out of private homes on Lake Mead because they sit on federal land.

Joyce Spencer is 77-years-old and her husband Ralph is 80. They've been spending most of their time in the family ice cream store since going home isn't an option.

The Spencers never expected to be forced out of their Lake Mead home, which they've owned since the 70s, but on Thursday, a park ranger said they had 24 hours to get out.

"I had to go to town today and buy Ralph undershirts and jeans because I forgot his pants," Joyce Spencer told Action News.

The Stewart's Point home sits on federal land, so even though the Spencers own their cabin outright, they're not allowed in until the government reopens.

Park officials said property owners can visit only to retrieve belongings; they sent Action News a statement which reads in part, "Unfortunately overnight stays are not permitted until a budget is passed and the park can reopen." Joyce Spencer said she's alright in the meantime, staying with nearby family, but the move was a lot to handle as a senior citizen.

"I had to be sure and get his walker and his scooter that he has to go in," Spencer said. "We're not hurt in any way except it might cost me if I have to go buy more pants."

The Lake Mead properties are considered vacation homes; one of the lease requirements to own a plot is people must have an alternative residence.

Regardless, the Spencers said it's their property and they should be allowed in, shutdown or not.

I wish the Republicans (I know, it may be asking too much) would all come out and question why Obumba is spending so more on Barrycades and extra police to keep people out when it costs nothing to let them enter. What a waste of the taxpayers money!

Hey cowboy you don’t have to cuss to be a real man. Cussing is Satan’s imitation for smiting with the weapons of the Holy Spirit. God’s army is very largely a construction battalion.

thank you HiTech!

it’s so easy to get caught up in the frustrating and seeming hopelessness of even bothering.

deep breaths.
pray.
try again.

So? They chose the government to be their vacation landlord, and those are only vacation cabins on their landlord’s land. They don’t own the real property there.

This is a 5th amendment illegal takings. If it is private property, it cannot be coopted by Obama without fair compensation and due process.

Hey I remember the folly of being like that. It’s shallower than a dried out wading pool. But hey it sounds neat and feels good and everyone’s saying yay about this imagined wonderful thing... of course this is the naked emperor bragging about his suit.

People need to believe in something. However something good often takes more than a minute to grasp while a lie can be believed in a second. Be patient and care, to the best capability the good Lord gives you (and you can always ask Him for more).

Hillary has got to be in a real box.

What to do....what to say.

She knows darn well the higher-information DemRat voters are reading plenty of the handwriting on the wall for their party as Obama continues his Reign of Terror.

HE doesn't care because he's a lame duck, but she's gotta be sweating bullets as she wonders what he'll pull next.

She knows he's punishing the folks, the elderly, the veterans....and hurting his own party. What can she do? What can she say?

Castigate Obama?

Hardly. She needs his help if she's a future presidential candidate.

Approve what he's doing in his scorched earth dictates?

Hardly, she doesn't want to be identified in any way with his unpopular dictates.

Just keep her mouth shut?

Hardly. The media, her own party and the populace in general are going to want to know just where she stands, and fast.

Does she stand with Obama and his wrecking crew? Or does she disavow what he's doing? Or does she go into hiding for a while?

What to do, what to say...what do YOU freepers think she'll do?

(....and I'll bet ole Bubba is mighty uncomfortable right now, also).

Still there was no real need for Barryco to be such a snot here. Do the Feds keep the utilities going? Probably not. It’s a temper tantrum writ large.

How did I miss this thread?!

This is the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, but today I tried to access the Gregg Basin part of the lake. It was barricaded with an armed guard. Normally, there isn't any NPS presence at Gregg Basin. Nor at Stewart's Point at the Overton Arm.

This is far worse than what I encountered today in Arizona.

Hey RINO governor Sandoval of Nevada! Are you going to do anything about this usurpation of states' rights? Or are you going to be like RINO Arizona governor Jan Brewer? Whine a bit, and do NOTHING!

“The White House sits on federal property. No one should be allowed back in until Zero and his Dem cronies get with it and sign a bill funding the government. “

Shut it down. The fountain, too.

By rights, all democrats should be given 24 hours to vacate DC or a massive rally of patriots shall be tasked to do the job.

This land ain’t your land
This land ain’t my land

It belongs to the federal gubamint
This land belongs to you and me.
