EW YORK (AP) The sisters of a woman who was fatally shot in Washington after trying to ram her car through a White House barrier say she was not a criminal and police should not have shot her.
"We're still very confused as a family why she's not still alive," Amy Carey-Jones said late Friday, speaking of her 34-year-old sister, Miriam Carey. "I really feel like it's not justified, not justified."
Another sister, retired New York City police officer Valarie Carey, said there was "no need for a gun to be used when there was no gunfire coming from the vehicle."
The sisters spoke outside Valarie Carey's home in Brooklyn Friday night after traveling to Washington to identify Miriam Carey's body.
Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Friday that its Internal Affairs Division is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. The Secret Service, Capitol Police and FBI are assisting, the department said.
Secret Service agents and Capitol Police officers both fired shots during the encounter with Carey. Witnesses said Carey hit a Secret Service agent with her car at the White House. A Capitol Police officer was also injured. Both are expected to recover.

The Sisters should be questioning the Doctors
who prescribed psychotropic drugs for her feeling blue.
Regarding hussein talking to her, just why did the official have to emphasize this, "Those communications were, of course, in her head,"? The Navy Yard guy was also hearing voices. Makes one wonder if the guy who set himself on fire also heard voices. Too coincidental.
A truly idiotic response. As if a vehicle cannot be carrying a toddler AND 500 pounds of explosives.
You don’t have to smack someone with a personal attack at the same time you enlighten them to unconsidered possibilities. Try leaving the attacks off and watch how things improve.
Sorry, but those who assume we must expect that any vehicle carrying a child is therefore innocent are idiots. Those who want to attack us are perfectly willing to blow up children in the process, their own if necessary.
To call those who refuse to recognize this possibility idiots is, I think, entirely reasonable.
If you were to look you would see the scrape on the bumper.
No, it is gratuitous insult. It is elevating self like Satan elevates himself. It is, in fact, being spiritually idiotic.
“hussein talking to her”
He was calling her and sending her text messages.
Doesn’t he send robo calls to all of his followers?
You do understand that after hitting the SS Agent at the White House, she led cops on a ‘high speed’ chase to the Capitol? You understand that within that 1.5-2 miles there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people working, touring, walking and driving on those streets? Present company included.
A full-sized sedan moving at even a moderate street on those streets is or can be a lethal weapon, especially if a mentally ill person is behind the wheel. Ironically, if there weren’t a government shutdown, it’s not unlikely that she wouldn’t have made it to Capitol Hill without running over a pedestrian.
Isn’t it also somewhat presumptuous for folks to assign psychic powers to these cops who are charged with protecting the public or public officials from harm? They’re supposed to divine not only the driver’s mental state, but the contents of the vehicle, i.e., any weapons or explosives, or even the baby?
Im not saying she should not have been taken out. I just question what started the whole thing. Ramming a barricade doesnt fit the evidence.
>> A truly idiotic response.
Not really.
I did look. In fact I took a couple of photos and zoomed in. I saw the scrape you mention and I’m far from convinced it was from ramming any kind of stationary object. I seriously doubt the official version of what started this event. We will never know what really caused her to panic and take off the way she did. If the officials lied about what started this then the validity of everything else they’ve reported is discounted as well imho.
Explosives, or no explosives in her car, there is rarely a legitimate reason to shoot someone when they are running away unless you fear they will harm you.
She never fired a shot and the police apparently didn’t fear the “car bomb” concern enough to stay far enough away from it.
It is, I think, entirely reasonable to call someone with your view, “an idiot.”
I was under the impression that she didn’t get through any White House barrier, and that the person who “was hit,” put himself in the way.
There is a reason police officers are trained to shoot only when they see a weapon being pulled on them. Apparently, you feel police don't kill enough citizens for you taste.
That's pretty sick, in my humble opinion.
>> Sorry, but those who assume we must expect that any vehicle carrying a child is therefore innocent are idiots.
I appreciate the effort you’re making, Sherman Logan, to prove I’m idiot.
No need to answer someone being asinine if you don’t want to. Sometimes silence is a good answer.
Tourists who were outside the White House as this whole scene began, said she drove up to the barricade/guard station (I think that one is permanent, not part of the govt shutdown) and when questioned, gunned the car, made a quick turn around, hitting one SS agent, and took off toward the Capitol, with cops in hot pursuit.
I avoid the White House, and have for probably the past 20 years, since before it was closed off to regular traffic @ ‘95 (post OK City bombing) so I’m no longer familiar with its guard posts. Hard to imagine now that we used to drive the road on its immediate East side every single day getting to work. That road is now a WH parking area, and we commoners can’t get within blocks of it.
I don’t know the full story, but a lot of posters here (who don’t know the full story, either) are calling SS and the Capitol Police “Keystone Cops” with no recognition of what they have to deal with every day. A mental case at the WH or Capitol is not exactly a rare event. The public never hears about 99% of them because these are highly trained professionals. This circumstance had some different elements to have triggered the series of events that became public.
The world we live in today includes weapons other than guns...like explosives strapped on one’s body. She was also in a high security area.
Given the recent events at DC (people setting themselves on fire, etc) and given the high profile shootings of the recent past...I have no doubt the security there is on edge.
If she had blown herself and a bunch of bystanders up...people would be screaming “Why didn’t the police stop her??? They had the chance!”
We have the luxury of 20/20 hindsight. That was not the case as events unfolded real-time.
