The stock market is getting a little bumpy as the government shutdown wears on, but if Congress pushes a deadline on the federal debt limit in two weeks, you can buckle up for something much scarier maybe even a replay of the 2008 financial crisis.
The difference: The shutdown, a dispute over the federal budget and the new health care law, will probably take a small bite out of economic growth. Messing with the debt limit would alarm investors around the world who lend the United States trillions of dollars.
Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist for the brokerage BTIG, told his clients in a note Wednesday morning that it appears increasingly likely that the fight over the shutdown will spill into a battle over the debt limit.

Yawn. I am enjoying less traffic on the roads with the government shut down.
Keep it shut down.
Boehner looked pissed just now. The discussion was a dead end with douchebama.
We’re winning! F U PETER KING!
Most sentient people know a default is coming. We just don’t know when the axe will fall, because it is in the hands of the Chinese, Russians, and others.
Daily, I am on the verge of tears, watching what is happening, and seeing how the government, selected by the mouth-breathers, seem oblivious, and eager to lead us over the cliff.
I know it has been many years coming, but it still hurts my soul to see the final failure of our noble experiment.
I am reminded of C.S. Lewis - we are now led by “men without chests”.
It was up yesterday and a bit down today likely up tomorrow.
Pray America is Waking Up
Foreigners quit buying our debt some time ago. Now it’s pretty much the Fed doing all the buying.
I was on I-70 all day, between KC and Indy yesterday. Light traffic.
Road repairs made up for it though.
I saw Tim Pawlenty earlier saying that America can’t dine and run but it seems to me that the only other option is keep eating and hope the restaurant never closes.
Your presidency is over, Obama. You can not lead a People who refuse to follow.
“The shutdown, a dispute over the federal budget and the new health care law, will probably take a small bite out of economic growth. Messing with the debt limit would alarm investors around the world who lend the United States trillions of dollars. “
Two baseless assumptions presented as facts. Government spending is more likely to slow economic growth, than it is to increase it. The world should be alarmed that the U.S. government raised its debt ceiling 10 times in the past 10 years. That’s not a sustainable model. The long-term goal has to be debt reduction.
However, the transition could be chaotic; unless handled adroitly.
Obama is deliberately trying to scare the market. If he manages to crash it, all bets are off... hang on to the ones you love.
The lame duck is fois gras.
We have new leaders. Don’t give up now. We need fighters
Erin honey....... you are terminally ignorant.
You need to repeat the econ course you screwed the professor for a C. Your feminine studies major has failed you
He should have never agreed to meet until he new what was on the table.
If the house folds now, they may as well give the House keys to Reid and go home.
That market it fake anyway. I’m just waiting for it go get back down to 7000 where it belongs so I can dump my fake paper money back into it.
Nice edit.
I have hope that Boehner will come to the realization that he is dealing with the bastard child of Satan. 0bama is a petulant Marxist revolutionary. I wished he’d just come out and say what he is. Damn near most of today’s so-called ‘Democrats’ aren’t anything of the kind. John F. Kennedy would be shocked an disgusted at today’s Democrat. He wouldn’t recognize them now.
