There is absolutely, positively no reason to have iPads in a school.

Catholic schools here in Indiana have used them for several years with good results. I assume they are a cost savings because these schools are always strapped for budget.

Now I fully realize they have a different level of personal responsibility and discipline for their students.

You are 100% correct. You can’t even type on an iPad! How this is a learning tool is beyond me!

Our private school handed some out to all high schoolers. They are facing the same issue as far as students wanting to surf, stream music, and socialize instead of school work. I am having to jump through hoops the block stuff for a proactive stand point.

Gee the Boomers and before all we had was books and I submit we have done more with technology advancements than Generation Null and Void.

Another 71 kids ostensibly lost their iPads just as immediately"

At least that tells them who the smart ones are.

This is only a semi-fail since getting the iPads into the hands of the students was only a secondary goal. The primary goal was to get the taxpayer to buy a bunch of iPads from a connected crony who could then donate back to the politicians who decided to buy the iPads in the first place. Crony and politician get fat, taxpayers get fleeced and who cares where the iPads wind up; they were only an excuse anyway.

Its because the OS doesn’t support enterprise level controls. They are user controlled devices.

Whoever thought this was a great idea needs to have their head examined!

Back to laptop and desktops now. something that can be locked down. Even better give everyone a dumb terminal and a keyboard and mouse. bring back the IBM dinosaur. Centralized computing is the answer.

I can see some reasoning behind it, but I can’t believe it actually got out of the small focus committee that first reviewed the idea.

There are massive problem to be overcome here.

We often talk about kids not having accountability, but the whole system has no accountability.

It seems to be utter chaos at these schools.

They are wonderful devices for the classroom and have too many uses to list here. Pecking is the new typing, and students can do so as quickly as proper typing. I’m all for parents buying these devices for students, but handing them out to a large number are irresponsible children is ridiculous.

“Is there anything gubmint doesn’t know?!!!”

I think it was in 1988 when Congress passed a law that school buses had to have seats belts for the riders with an ignition interlock. So, if any student unlocked his belt the buss would stop...(Long pause.) They installed them in some unknown number of busses which sat...and sat...because every time they started moving, a student would open belt and shut them off. Stupidest thing I ever heard.

Then there was Miami that put a device on every light so that busses, fire trucks and emergency vehicles could press a button and turn the light green so they’d have priority passage. It worked for two weeks, but the devises weren’t encrypted and somebody was selling a knockoff box on the internet. There were dozens of crashes in intersections as many people decided they should have priority passage. (Too stupid for words.)

This was predicted based on other similar programs in other schools.

But they went ahead anyway.

We have an awful problem with just our family members! My husband is a computer network architect. “Then why can’t you keep them from playing games online and searching for music when they’re supposed to be working?!?”

I would like to know who approved this (I’m assuming the school board), and exactly how they benefited from this decision. Sounds like someone needs to see the inside of a jail cell.
