Avita Samuels has worked at the Mall of America in Minneapolis for the last four years, juggling a sales job with her studies in political science and law at the University of Minnesota. The 24-year-old has been the top sales associate for the last three years and works between 29 and 35 hours a week. But over the past few months, she said, she has watched as friends working in stores around her have their hours and benefits slashed and she's worried that she will be next.
Forever 21, the clothing store, told staff last month in a memo leaked to the press that it planned to cut hours and reclassify some full-time workers as part- time. The move, which the company denied had anything to do with President Barack Obama's health reforms, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), will nevertheless help it avoid a mandate under the legislation requiring companies with 50 or more employees to offer those working 30 hours a week or more health insurance. Earlier this month, Seaworld, which operates 11 entertainment parks across the US, capped hours for part time workers at 28, down from 32, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Heckuva job, Barack!
It’s what he wants, actually. Just another flight of stairs on up to Single-Payer system. All these part-timers will be subsidized, and some day soon Obama will deliver the final ultimatum - full NHS to control costs.
Elections have consequences.
Again, I can’t help but notice this article is from the Guardian. Refreshing and reassuring to know that the media in this country has no agenda.
Every last one.
Our American Pravda media is more of an enemy of the American people than the Democrats ever thought to be.
Socialist utopia is here.
Tru Dat
subsidized by who?
all those people working part time and not paying taxes?
less than half of Americans now work at all
one thing our new class of immigrants can teach us is how to thrive in an underground untaxed economy
subsidized by us that pay taxes, stolen from us by the government and doled out like all the other entitlements they use to buy votes with.
they are approaching the point where they cannot extort more taxes from the shrinking middle class (about to shrink even more under obamacare taxes)
the upper class remains crafty enough to stay in the uppers by legal maneuvers to shield their wealth including buying benevolent treatment by the USG
something has to change
I say “they” will look at how to confiscate untaxed wealth- like IRA/s/401k’s, 2d homes or business property, or even “home equity”- already have imposed a tax on home sales proceeds
“I say they will look at how to confiscate untaxed wealth- like IRA/s/401ks, 2d homes or business property, or even home equity- already have imposed a tax on home sales proceeds”
I’ve got nothing but minimal equity in a home and a small 401k I’ve stopped contributing to (no point in saving for 30 years down the road while putting groceries on a credit card), but people who have such retirement plans should know their SS will be adjusted to reflect that. Until (if?) the ants outnumber the grasshoppers again, the class warfare will continue. Here in NJ we have a massive and growing black market economy; without it whole sections of the state would be a ghost town. Illegal aliens working for cash living in illegal apartments driving without licenses, insurance, or registration, giving fake names & addresses when they visit hospitals and never paying the bills (this has closed some hospitals already, just as in southern CA). Using pre-paid phones that give them the flexibility to follow the jobs they’ve stolen from Americans...
We have certainly forgotten the role illegal aliens played on 9/11, and we had front-row seats to the WTC horror (losing plenty of our own residents in that).
Bingo.
” juggling a sales job with her studies in political science”
WoW! A degree in political science!
When she graduates and quits her employer she can use that degree as a reference in the unemployment line.
What a waste of time...a degree in political science.
Maybe more of the good people of New Jersey should just move to Puerto Rico ands switch places with the newcomers- the weather is better
NJ is such a beautiful place but I do NOT know how ordinary people deal with the property taxes
I too majored in liberal arts and after graduation I learned a phrase that kept me afloat for a year until I joined the military
“Will that be for here or to go?”
Just got the early notice yesterday that our employer health insurance is going up. Don’t know how much yet. I’m wondering how long it’ll be ‘til they cut the hourly workers hours.
“What a waste of time...a degree in political science”
Not necessarily.
I have one and although I don’t use it, I do have a respectable job. I know a number of other people who were Pol Sci majors and they did well for themselves - and even better yet, they’re not lawyers!
In retrospect, I look back at college and wish I had gone into the military or trade school instead. It probably would have been better for me in the long run.
